The 2016 Proof Sets went on sale today. Did anyone place an order? The mints going to be at a local show on April 15th, so I'm going to pick mine up there. I figure that I can QC them on the spot and save both of the hassle of a return.

The proof set is now $1 less for one less proof dollar. Last year the markup was 4.768 times face. This year the markup is 5.406 times face. If you apply last year's markup to the current face, the price should be $28.18. Even if you round up to 28.95 because the packaging is basically the same, you're looking at what amounts to a $3 price increase. That's a pretty substantial price increase.

Not yet. These should be around for a while so I plan to bundle a few things together to save on shipping.

I see what you're getting at but even though there is one less dollar coin in the set, the packaging (as you mentioned) and production overhead is likely still roughly the same as in 2015. I'd expect them to reduce the cost of the set by only a dime if they decided not to include it.

We'll see what happens next year when there are no Presidential dollars. If they only reduce the price $3 more, then they'll really be sticking it to us. Of course I'll still buy because I have this crazy compulsion.

Well, there will be one less plastic lens in the set so it *should* be somewhat cheaper... one would like to think...

I don't buy the clad proof sets (except the old ones where clad was the only option), but I always buy the silver proof set from the Mint.

I'm looking forward to ordering mine!

boris!

I am also waiting to save on shipping costs since I need 2. The one to keep intact and the one to break for the albums. Will need two of the silver proof sets mid month. Also need the silver proof ATB Quarters, uncirculated ATBs and the uncirculated Presidential dollars. And the gold Mercury dime is right around the corner as well. So one of my paychecks month is already dedicated to the US Mint. Oh, forgot to mention the first coin show of the year in my area is April 16th. Woo Hoo! Gonna have to get a little more creative with my grocery list this month.

I'm hoping the proof & mints sets will be cheaper to get at my local coin shop in time...at least no shipping cost.
I used to order everything from the mint each year, but stopped around 2010/2011, due to financial calamities. I have to play catch-up for 5 or 6 years now....lol.
As far as the sets decreasing in size....lol..I bet the mint has some ideas on that ! --- I'm sure there are plans on the table for more coins to fill the void and increase interest again...and again...and again...

Thank you for the welcome Debrajc!

I also have been curious what the Mint has in store for the proof sets in the coming years.

I bought 3.

I am like most with one I break up for the albums and one I keep in OGP.

I am trying to build a second OGP set from 1965-present of clad, silver and p d unc so I can be ready to break it, sell it or give it away one day. About half way there on the backup OGP.

Mine has also been shipped. One thing I like about buying direct from the mint is that no one has looked at the coins yet. This could be good or bad - if it's a dud, I have to send them back. But I also might luck out and get a high end 69 or 70 that someone else might have cherry picked out before putting the set up for sale.

borris!

I've purchased two past many years as others have for one to keep in OGP and one to break for albums. Though I haven't really gotten around the 2nd part of that yet.

The Mint e-mailed me yesterday to tell me the set has been mailed out to me; .........and my charge card billed.

I also dis-like paying the shipping cost for each of the three sets I normally buy each year (unc., proof, and silver proof). I did try to save some shipping cost last year when I bought the MOD set (I think) at the same time as one of the year sets, but they were shipped out from different locations so I was still charged shipping twice.

Just placed my order for the Proof, clad and silver proof set along with the centennial park coins. Pretty nice looking.
