So there is this local upcoming auction in a few weeks that has some really nice scarce items (not coins sadly) that I believe that the auctioneer has overlooked and hasn't advertised properly to maximize value. It is a smaller auctioneer that isn't known for having quality items and there probably only be a few antique dealers in attendance that vaguely know what the items are and what they may be worth. I think I have the advantage over all of them in this regard.
So I can't wait for the auction to get here and I'm hoping that there won't be any huge absentee bids or unexpected competition on the items I'm interested in. I expect one dealer that I often bid against for better items to be a thorn in my side (& bid me up) but hope that I ultimately prevail at a reasonable price.
Anybody else have this feeling? Seeing something rare and valuable amidst a bunch of low value items and hoping that no one notices? [very nervous at this point]

I am going to a public numismatic auction view day this next friday, when there are over 5,000 lots totalling perhaps $4 million, are up for the highest bidder. I personally know the auctioneer, but that gives me zero advantage, when it comes bidding.

Quote: Anybody else have this feeling? All the time--that adrenaline rush combined with ego are probably why people bid over their planned maximums at auctions. Good luck!

Joe2007, where did you say this auction was, and what were those items again?

One or two years ago, I went to a weekly estate auction here in Berlin. They would publish the catalog every thursday or friday and the auction always used to be on tuesdays. Depending on how many coin lots they had up for auction I would decide if the auction was worth a visit or not. And I always couldn't wait for the catalog to be published.
Best thing about the coins: They sometimes had big plastic bags containing large amounts of very diverse coins. The challenge basically was to turn these bags over and over again to see through the plastic foil what coins were included and how much they could be worth. Sometimes I ended up with some very nice German States minors for a very low price. :)
Best regards from Berlin

I keep away from auctions. I still remember going to one a long time ago and met a person I used to know that works there. His job was to bid on stuff to get the prices up. After I heard that, I keep away from those places.

Having an auction that is too far down the road has positive and negative effects. Positive: being able to examine the items (hopefully with good images) and pooling some money together. Negative: having to wait for it!

Definitely all the time. Have to slow it down until we sell our vehicle (for cash flow) but the ones I have been to especially there always seems to be at least a couple good deals. Went to an auction yesterday that had some really high end stuff 99% was way over priced but was able to grab a 2012 s Eagle 2 coin set for $100
