I have a large collection which contains many circulated coins. I am thinking of selling them off. Where would you sell them? ebay would give me the most exposure, but would cost me a listing fee and a final sale price fee. Craig's list is somewhat risky according to the media. Dealers will low ball you to no end, so what other options are there?

Do you have a lot of low value items or fewer high value ones? If the value is substantial, how about an auction? You could also try setting up at a local coin show for a month or two if you have a lot of lower value items.

There is no way to simultaneously minimize risk, minimize time spent, and maximize return.

many circulated coins

Can you give us just a couple examples? I think that there is a big difference in how to market your coins if you are talking 1976 bicentennial quarters vs. large cents vs. roman silver coins. All have circulated to some extent.

Any local coin clubs? Craigs list is a good idea just meet at a safe public place. Sell in small lots on the bay.

I agree with spence, it would depend on what the coins are.

If they are common coins that were, or can be pulled from circulation,
then it will be hard to sell at a premium over face.

If they are common silver coins, like Washington quarters or Roosevelt
dimes, it will be hard to get melt/spot.
Rest in Peace

If you had enough quality posts you could sell them here on CCF . you need 250 and be a member for at least 90 days.
We have thousands of members who are always looking to buy coins .
BTW , to CCF .

I have at least 100 Morgans about 40 peace I have full set of Peace dollars, Washington quarters and a full set of Franklin halves and many more coins. I have to go to the safe deposit box to look. I just cant remember at this time. I am looking to get rid of anything that is not MS condition. I have many duplicates that are in MS condition as well.

Your best bet is ebay if you want to sell now. I would avoid Craigslist and you won't be able to sell here at CCF for a while. There are other coin forums that don't require waiting period but you wouldn't have any established reputation for selling. Lastly are coin shows/dealers. Dealers would likely not offer what you want for them and selling at shows probably wouldn't yield more than ebay.

One other option is selling directly to APMEX. You can call them and get a quote to see if the offer appeals to you. Good luck!

I thank all of you for posting replies to my question. I think I will bite the bullet and sell on ebay. I just hate giving them so much of my money. I sell other things on ebay all the time. I just think they are taking advantage their sellers by charging a listing fee and a final sale fee including shipping. Another thing I don't like about ebay is that they don't protect the seller. An example of them not protecting their sellers is I sold a brand new factory sealed toner cartridge for a printer for $160.00. The user clamed I gave him a used toner cartridge. He put a claim in with ebay. I received a box with a completely different used toner cartridge and I lost the $160.00 and ebay refused to assist me.

I agree, selling your coins on ebay might bring you the most money.

Many collectors seem to complain about not being able to get retail
prices when they sell their coins. They complain dealers don't pay the
enough.

I think about the only way you can get retail prices is to open your
own coin shop.

Almost all avenues of selling your coins will have costs, or problems.
Coin shops - will pay wholesale
ebay - losing and selling fees, and possible mailing problems
Coin shows - table fees, and hard to sell common coins

I think the hardest lessons to learn in this hobby is learning what
coins buy and sell for.

I feel for you about that ebay thing. I have been complaining for a long time now that ebay cares for its buyer more than its seller. With all the fees they collect they should protect sellers against scams.
Maybe if enough people complained....

IF you can find a coin show or coin club, go to them. Ask dealers if they would either buy your coins or sell them for you. Usually a local coin club would be the safest and fastest method. Also, stick around here for a while and you can sell them here.

People have been complaining for years and it falls on deaf ears. I guess as long as people keep buying and selling on their site it will be business as usual.

Warts and all, ebay is still the best place to sell for collectors unfortunately for lower value coins. If you have coins with individual values above a few hundred dollars then a auction company like Heritage or Great Collections make sense.
