So I bid on two 1860 Netherlands 2 1/2 Guldens, I am the first bidder at $29. The pictures were not great, but 6 days left and these are $100 min coins. To my surprise, I win the auction and open the listing to see what I missed. Turns out, sometime AFTER I bid the seller added this statement: I got a message from an ebay member who said that the coins are both forgeries ...... I don't know. He might be right. I bought them because they look cool. If they are forgeries than just buy them for fun like I did. He also told me that the edge lettering reads, "May God be with us."
Hope someone likes them.I then had a conversation with the seller via ebay mail, but before I reveal that I am curious what you would say? Edited by Buymyemu 04/12/2016 10:52 pm

The "No returns" comment by a seller is meaningless, especially if they sold counterfeits.

Actually the "no returns" is an invalid argument if he knew that he sold counterfeit coins. Depending on how you work it out with the seller and if you want to return it - you should be able to claim your money back. I believe that if you really want to push it, you can forward the message to ebay for review. You will be asked to dispose the counterfeit and your money is refunded. Again, it comes down to you. I personally will ask for a refund and lodge a complain with ebay. As a buyer, you should not need to tolerate counterfeits unless you really want it for some reason.

Keeping them is the easiest thing to do, but returning them iand getting your money back is the right thing to do. If counterfeit, and you aren't a collector of counterfeits, then these "coins" have zero value.

Just ask him to cancel the transaction and move on. The seller should have cancelled the auction as soon as he realized the coins were not genuine.

All too often the seller knows the coins are fake right from the start, and add in a comment like that later on thinking it covers them. The "no returns" part is always a red flag with coins as well.

30 min. after the auction eneded (way before he shipped them), I sent the following message (March 31, I had just read the modified auction listing that I won):
New message to: jemtext Hello, If these are fake I would not pay more than about $5. Can you find a magnet and see if it sticks?
Also, do you have a scale that measures weight, can you tell what they weigh?
Thanks
I never got a reply so I decided to wait for the coins to arrive...

@buymyemu, would you please post the ebay seller ID so that some of us can take a closer look at his other auctions? As you may know, we have a mechanism here at CCF for getting ebay to take down auctions of counterfeit coins.

Hate to say this, but you are enabling a dealer in counterfeit coins. Initiate a refund based on fake goods and ebay will see you get your money back. The No Returns policy is meaningless, you still get your refund.

I am getting to the fun part.
This is the message I sent to him on April 11, two days after the coins arrived:
HI John, I received the two gulders today, they both appear to be counterfeit. Under magnification they both are showing copper at the wear points, and weigh at least 1 gram less than they should. One of the two also seems to be bulging on the rear.
I would like to offer you $5 each for them, otherwise I would like to return both.
Thanks

His reply, not exactly what I would have said if I wanted to keep 100% feedback:
Sorry I sold them as is. I made no guarantees. I also said that someone else thought they were fake. I sold them as a novelty. I don't know anything about coins and I bought them because they were fun. That was clear in my posting. If you bought them as real then I am sorry.

Sorry, only two more postings: here is my reply to his denial of return: John, It really comes down to this: I believe I placed my bid BEFORE you modified your listing with the statement about counterfeit (at which time, according to ebay's rules of not allowing counterfeit's, you should have ended the listing). I can dispute it to ebay if you wish.

And now for his last and most fun reply! (the all caps shows his anger I guess):
YOU ARE JUST A TROUBLE MAKER AND A MALCONTENT. YOU HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE THE AUCTION ENDED OR TO CANCEL YOUR BID.

This will be the first bad review I have given in 16 years on ebay, and also his first to receive.
