There will be a mintage of only 125k. Will you guys be getting one. How do you think this type of thing will roll out? How has such coins performed in the past? Do they get gobbled up quickly shooting up the price or what?

Thanks for your advice

They have a tendency to rise on the secondary market when issued due to "First Strike" slabbing demands and the "gotta have it now" crowd.

Later on they usually drop back to near issue price and then slide up and down with the price of gold.

I think this first go around is for "unc" coins. Nothing surprises me, but if the demand is there they'll figure out a way to issue proofs and 3 coin sets of these things. The mint can be very creative with their marketing techniques.

125K is a lot of coins, too!

And at $210 ish each they are a bit pricey for one tenth of an ounce of gold. But I will order one anyway when they come out and will probably order the standing liberty one as well depending on available funds at the time. And, I am not a flipper so secondary market prices do not concern me.

I am buying one.

Why?

First of all I am buying gold back again for my collection as prices are no longer going down.

Secondly, this coin, is the one that sucked me into collecting coins.

I will give the cliff notes version of how this happened.

I was into baseball cards. I had lots of them. That was what I enjoyed collecting. At the time, this shop had one side coins, the other baseball cards.

One day, out of the MANY times I went to the card shop, I wondered over to the coin side. In the case the dealer had all sorts of coins. He had Mercury dimes, Buffalo nickles, etc. Being young, I was intrigued by these two coins. I mean what the heck, I had NEVER seen these before. How could it be there could be coins that I had never seen before?

I was so captivated by the Mercury dime that I bought a few and a few Buffalo nickles.

I never went farther than those coins, I stopped there and wasnt interested but getting the Mercury dime put me on the bullion collecting track at a young age.

How so?

Well, the dealer had american silver eagles out on display as well. The large size caught my attention and I bought I think like 5 lol. Somewhere in my collection in have them. From there, I never stopped collecting bullion silver and gold coins. I remember going with my friend to the bank down the street and looking at the US Mint display case with gold and silver proof eages lol.

Had not that silver Mercury dime caught my eye, I would have NEVER been into collecting bullion coins.

So to me, seeing this coin, coming out in gold, it really resonates with me and reminds me of that time. So this is a keeper.

How will this coin do? I have no clue but generally speaking, from my experince in watching these mint issued coins-

1- big dealers will snatch up their allotments and be pushing all sorts of graded slabs with fancy labels, like "FIRST ISSUE DIME" or " SPECIAL EXTRA SPECIAL RARE GOLD MERCURY GOLD LABEL" or something silly like that.

2- There will be both PF69 and PF70 grades

3- prices will spike for a while.

The REAL test is when these coins hit the secondary market and establish a track record of about 6-12 months. If you see prices rise on ebay and then STAY up there for the time period and continue to push higher, then this coin could do well. But who knows, only time will tell

4- very few NCLT coins rise. There are some but again, the way to determine how well they do is by making yourself a database and plotting out prices over a span of time. rises prices = higher prices down the road. I coin that falters on the secondary market often will sell for LESS than the mints release price.

125K is a heck of a lot of coins. It might be too much for anyone to be interested. On the flip side, I have seen coins with a mintage of 150 repeatedly sink on ebay. So its all about SUPPLY AND DEMAND over time.

We wont really know how well this coin does until some time goes by and the initial release date passes by and then see how it does on the secondary market.

As someone else said, the "gotta have it now crowd" is going make this coin spike, I am sure. But how long that lasts, only time will tell.

In my case, I dont speculate on coins. I buy to collect. I speculate for a living and coins dont interest to speculate on. To collect, then yes, I am interested.

And we're bound to see your normal TV hucksters making a run at these coins. My estimation is that they will be just as hot as the 25th ann. Silver Eagle set. And with the 10 per household limit, yeah...it won't last.

I picked up a gold plated Mercury dime on ebay a few months ago, not knowing about the impending release of the bullion coin. Considering the prices, I will remain happy with my pretty gold plated 1934. Food for thought...

When these coins go down in price to more accurately reflect the bullion value, I will pick one up from the aftermarket. They are beautiful!

WAY too expensive for that high of a mintage. I'm passing. A shame too because at around 170-180 I would have picked them up

I bought two. I think the reissue Mercury, standing, and walking Liberty have a timeless appeal and synergy together. Those three coins are quite beautiful. But the sales of the future two coins may be lower mintage at much higher prices.

What surprised me is how difficult it was to complete the sale online, took multiple attempts and about 10 minutes of refreshing. The order interface is terrible as virtually every selection causes a refresh. One hour later the dimes were no longer visible, so did 125,000 sell out in that time? If yes, then that is about as aggressive buying as happened with the Truman C&C sets (relatively).

A sellout of 125,000 coins in 21 minutes seems FAR MORE aggressive than Truman and Eisenhower C&C sets which I think were 17,000 and 25,000 in 12-17 minutes respectively (please don't quote me). Those are still $150-$200 sets right and have about $17 in intrinsic metal value.

Is it me or does 125k seem like way too high of a mintage for this to hold its ground? I'm not a price hawk trying to make a buck on ebay but I look at this selling out in 20 min and think that the vast majority of these had to end up in the hands of people looking to flip them. That's going to flood the market and kill it. I would think 50k would have been the sweet spot for production on this.

yea I was way tooo busy to get one, just couldnt do it. I had NO CLUE it would sell out, not at these numbers. I mean I just cannot stop what I Am doing in the middle of the day to place an order like this no can do but whatever.

SO... that being the case I will start building a database on prices from ebay and take it from there to find out what its really worth, whether this sell out was real or not.

I am going to take a shot here and say it was mostly dealers who picked these up, I mean really, why would that be a surprise?

Now get ready for all the various labels and slabs "first gold issue" and "first Merc strike" and "Gold Special Ultra Big Bird Yellow" label and .. ok I'll stop lol

anyways, ebay, here I come, I am ready to get that data base built on this coin!!!
