As usual I exaggerate ! I went to the local "Bay State Coin Show" with the intention of looking for some 'junk' to peddle with my other sorts of junk that I list on ebay. I hadn't been in a few years and had very low expectations. Always a good thing as it keeps one from being disappointed ! So my first stop was my old friend 'Nick' (the Grik) as he frequently has a few bags of low end material. Now after having warned others of the dangers of not getting innoculated to the dangerous viruses found in such places I failed to protect myself ! Twenty five years ago I bought a nice 42mm 64 gram Ptolemy II and felt myself sufficiently protected. But Mssr Nick had on display a Whopper ! More accurately a Quarter Pounder. 47-8mm and a grand 99.22 grams ! I felt helpless ....... The fever took hold of me and I reached for my pocket. Twenty forty sixty eighty one hundred ......... Ptolemy II 47-8mm 99.22 grams Fortunately I had a few pesos left for a bag of junk ! 15 decent coins for $150 Well Nick was nice enough to extend me bit of credit. I might keep this one though ...... for a little while I rather like it Despite it being such a PUUUUUUUUNY denomination ! Time to run now (the wife is calling !) or I would provide the attribution !

Wow, that is a lot of metal. Can anyone explain to me why so many of these coins have a circular divot in the center of the obv?

Nick actually had a lovely Ptolemy II that was much nicer looking. Trouble was it weighed in at 65 grams which is almost the same as my previous 'big boy'. Hardly worth blowing my measly cash reserves on ! But despite the price tag (around 5 Constantius I London mint folles) I had no hesitation. If you are interested in the 'little bro' (65 gram VF) I am reasonably sure 'Nick' still has it.

Hard to resist a Gordian 111 as nice as that one, despite the fact that that you might have one or two Gordian 111's already. The quarter pounder Ptomemy? - nice burger for a robot! Make me numismatically hungry, although I don't have any personal robotic inclinations.

Very nice arnoldoe ! Great portrait too and fabulous reverse. I did hesitate for but a moment as the condition of mine shows some abuse. But I reasoned that my 3 smaller Ptolemy's all had VF portraits so I could compromise a bit for "El Grande" ! Such a shame it has lost a bit from wear and tear otherwise it must have topped the 100 gram threshold. I paid a bit more than I might normally consider (cheap I am) but the fever took hold and I was took weak to resist.
I think I have the situation under control now. With a 5 gram 35 gram 64 gram and now 99 gram I have a full spectrum. But you never know I might find one in the lower gram range which are still quite affordable.
It seems like the bigger and smaller fetch the high prices with those around 25 grams still quite reasonable. Time will tell. In the meantime I am armed and dangerous !

I saw one of those Ptolemy coins recently while browsing and had it in my cart for ten minutes before deciding I wouldn't know what to do with such a big coin. It won't fit in a 2x2, and it won't even fit in a box designed for ounce sized coins...
Its nice, but I don't have room for something so big... where are you gonna keep it? Let me suggest you could use it to hold the door open ^^
2 nice coins though, hope you had a fun day... maybe next time wear a face mask and surgical gloves.

Group shot of the "Boys" My memory of the weights was imperfect 20mm 9.37 grams 36mm 35.71 grams 42mm 67.65 grams 48mm 99.22 grams I did once have another in the 25 gram range but alas .... regrettably I sold it. It seems to indicate a size range of 1/10 1/4 (sold) 1/3 2/3 1 I may need to be more careful next time I venture to a show
