Part of my late Fathers coin collection was the following Proof and Mint sets. Looking at the prices on ebay for sets like these being sold is anywhere from $6 up to $18.

My question when I look at the individual coin values on some of these it suggests I could make more money breaking them open and selling individual coins.

I have a good start on a currency collection and now plan on selling most of the coins and silver using that money to purchase currency to add to my collection.

Yet I will do nothing that is not ethical or consistent with good preservation collectors would do!

Comments please...

I recommend you keep them given the source of the coins was your late father, but if you must sell them, then keep them in the original mint packaging.
Rest in Peace

Despite what the price guides may say, you won't make more breaking them out. Don't open the sealed boxes. A good selling price for problem free sets to dealers is "bid" (from the grey sheet) minus 10%. I wouldn't sell for less but wouldn't expect more.

Sorry to hear about your father; I hope you and your family are coping. I'm sure you'd rather have him than his coin collection but it is definitely something to remember him by. Think of the time and care he spent on building it -- as a currency collector I'm sure you can appreciate it. I didn't know the man but I'm sure he'd be happy knowing that his collection is being leveraged to further his son's!

Good luck and if you haven't already done so, post pics of some of your notes in the Currency forum. We like photos.

CelticKnot...thanks for the comments....my father passed away in 1995, it tore my heart out, but I was lucky to have the time we had together as he had major heart surgery at 47 and then died at 69. His collection was passed to my Mom and then when she passed in 2010, I got the collection. I put it away knowing that when I retired I would have time to work on it. I am not retired, so the work/fun has begun.

Dad worked in banking his whole life, starting after he got discharged from the Army in 1945. He fought with Patton in Europe and was wounded on April 16, 1945. He almost made it through the war without being wounded, war ended about 30 days later. It was a million dollar wound which got him home and eventually discharged. He was one of the lucky ones.

As a banker he had access to many coin dealers and with the mint in Denver. I know at one time he got a tip and bought a bag of 1950 D nickels at face value from the mint. Then sometime in the late 1960's he sold them for $0.75 each, he was proud of that profit....but I wish I had them now...! SMILE...

I have the good currency he had out being graded, I will post pictures when I get them back.

Again thanks for the comments....

I know the feeling. My dad had a heart attack in 1982 at age 54, the Dr. said one of the worst he'd seen anyone live through. Dad went through quadruple by pass surgery shortly thereafter, and lived till 2010, three days prior to his 82nd birthday when he passed away from a heart attack associated with congestive heart failure. His death was extremely hard on me, I lived in NC at the time and mom and dad came up from KY to see my son graduate from high school the evening before his death. I've often wondered if they hadn't made that trip whether dad would still be living. Dr.'s had said his heart was only functioning at 25%, I wonder if the stress of a 500 mile trip is what killed him. My son was the last of his grandchildren to graduate high school and he told friends that he was going to see him graduate if it was the last thing he did, just over 12 hours later he died at my house. I think one of the things that made it so hard on me is that I was the one who performed CPR until the EMT's got there, but he still didn't make it. I too consider myself lucky that dad lived as long as he did, I could easily have lost him when I was 22 years old, instead he lived until I was 50 for which I'm grateful. All we can do now is hold onto the memories.

RCook...I tried to send you and email, but I am still regarded as a newbie and they do not let me send emails yet. Go figure! Regardless I am sorry that you had a similar loss of your father as I did. I was able to see my Dad over the Christmas holiday 3 weeks before he died. That was a blessing, but he lived far enough away that I did not make it to the hospital to see him one last time...

Thanks for the comments....
