So I was one of those people who got insanely excited about the 25th Anniversary American Silver Eagle set when it was first announced in 2011, fully convinced that this set would eventually go up dramatically in value due to the desirability and relatively low mintage. And so I went ahead and bought the maximum household limit of 5 sets at $300. In the days and weeks that followed, I watched the prices for sets in OGP rise to over $1000 per set on ebay, which certainly made me feel good about my purchase. I thought about selling some of my sets, but I figured it as better to hold onto them for the long term. Well, it has now been five years since the set was released, and I suppose the prices have probably stabilized as much as they are going to at this point. And so, with some trepidation, I decided to check actual sale prices for recent sales on ebay... Basically, sets in OGP have been selling recently for right around $500. Certified sets (especially those in PF/MS 70) seem to be doing a bit better, but even those are only selling at $800-900. On the bright side, at least the "final" value is still above the original $300 I paid, but I no longer think these will ever be worth significantly more. And yes, I probably should have flipped 4 out of 5 and taken a quick profit when I had the chance. Live and learn...

If you are in it for profit, there is no better time to sell than the during the immediate post-release-sell-out frenzy.

I bought 3 and sold one for $600. So I ended up paying $150/set for two. Nice.
Then my house got robbed and the two remaining sets were stolen.
After about another year I bought one from a CCF member. So I ended up paying about $800 for one set.
Talk about a roller coaster. Sheesh.

Yikes Celtic. My set is in PCGS 69 that I bought at great collections for $450 But I needed to add it to push my total over $1500 to avoid taxes so I technically paid only about $350 over what I would've if I didn't buy it. So by my math I paid about $350 for the set

The 2011 ASE I got was a stroke of the cyber space gods. Went for it the first day and just crazy. It took better than a week that my order was confirmed. Bought one and still in the OGB it is now in a zip lock bag in my safe. CelticKnot, WOW what a bummer, I could post a better term but ....

I have zero issues with the 25th Annie set. I bought 20 and ended up with 13 MS/PF70 sets.
FYI: recent sales of 70 grade sets:
Yesterday: NGC $1250
two days ago: PCGS $1349
Nope...no complaints here. Great set...

So sold four sets for $2850. $1350 profit .... And still have one set.
I am happy with that.

I've been looking at coin shows for two years for a 25th Anniversary ASE set. I couldn't seem to find a set where all five coins were problem free. I found one on ebay that looked promising and emailed the seller. He said he was the original owner and there were no spots or issues. I won the auction for $505 delivered. I should have been paying attention in 2011, but I'm happy with what I have now.

Regardless of my personal misfortunes with this set, I definitely am happy with the set I have. As soon as I saw my two were missing I knew I'd be replacing them at some point. Shortly after that theft, I bought a big ol' safe in which to store my replacement 25th Anniversary Set. I do recall vividly the fervor leading up to the release of this set and the anticipation of the reverse proofs and such. Also the problems people had with the old mint site.... timeouts, errors, ultra-lag, etc. I myself had plenty of issues but managed to push my order through... it was quite the rush when the confirmation page (and email) showed up!

In 2011 I was a victim of the recession, unemployed and selling my coins to pay my mortgage. I knew I could profit on these sets but only ordered the one to keep my ASE set current. I'm glad I have it.

I also bought the 5 sets, graded them through PCGS. Pleased with the results: 2 of my bullion coins (69 and 70) came back showing the DDO. So pretty happy overall.

I was still in college at the time and just starting to seriously collect coins. Unfortunately I was too late to that party. I don't want a complete set, I am just trying to have an ASE type set and that set would have just about done it. Aw well!

@bpoc1,
2012 had to relocate for the first job offer after a year unemployed to Idaho. Walked away to my home under water. Currently with the best employer of my life, new home purchase, great woman, and adding to my collection.
