I've been away for awhile, but I've still been working on a type set as time allows. I've become a little more comfortable picking raw coins that I think would receive a straight grade (no details) and I am interested to see what comments the community has about a few recent acquisitions. I'll do a new topic for each coin (since I think that is the preferred method--someone please correct me if not) To my eye everything on this 1875-S Twenty Cent Piece looks like natural wear (no cleaning or other monkey business) even though the camera seems to pick up more lines in the obverse fields than are visible in hand. I included a couple of pics to hopefully give a better impression of the coin. Thanks for looking! -Chris (Incidentally, I've always had this thought that if $20 coins were double eagles, then these coins should really should have been known as double dimes  )    |

VF-30. I agree it's possible it might have had an old cleaning, but from the pictures provided and your word that the hairline scratches arn't visible in hand, I will give it a problem free grade.

Very well struck with only slight weakness on the shield and elbow. The hairlines in the field to Miss Liberty's right (viewer left) and to the left of the date concern me based on the photos. I would say wear grade is around XF40 based on robe detail, shield, and hair. I think 25-30 is entirely too low for the wear grade regardless of the surface.

Detail looks XF but I am concerned about the surfaces. Are there hairlines present?

I'm holding it in my hand again now and I am baffled. To the naked eye the fields look like those of other (PCGS/NGC certified) silver coins of similar grades that I have: just many random small wear marks in all directions...but I guess the camera doesn't lie?
If I tilt it just right under magnification, I sometimes get a fleeting glimpse of hairlines but nothing like the photos. Maybe it was wiped really lightly at some point, maybe not even in an attempt to clean it?
Any thoughts on the reverse? It still has a hint of cartwheel luster.
I agree with the XF40 assessment, there is enough detail to put it solidly in that category.

I cannot tell if it has been cleaned, but I would think EF-40.

By the way, there are a lot of people who call them "double dimes" :)
If the hairlines are invisible in hand, it would probably hit a problem free XF40 holder just fine.

If there are no cleaning hairlines, it easily makes EF-40, even commercial EF-45. If the hairlines are fairly obvious, the net grade would be VF-30

I looked at this last night however I didn't chime in then. My initial thought was this coin is in the XF range. As Paralyse has pointed out there is detail in the devices.

At least EF-40 - look at that hairline, and LIBERTY shows minimal wear. I would agree that it has been lightened at some point.

EF details. Cleaned.
Old cleaning might be market acceptable, but I would not buy it as problem-free.
