From the pics,I think it is possible. The trick or rule is you must be able to tell very light scratches from die polishing.Thats why I suggested a dealer.I got excited and the coins are yours.

Nice dude thanks! I'd say with 99% certainty it's polishing. The edges are too bright and fresh to be circulated. And the guy had them marked as Uncirculated. I can't see how UNC in a roll could get scratched into looking like these do. Thanks for the positive reinforcement on going to the dealer!

I know sharpness of the Strike is a big decider with a lot of you guys, so I made a side by side of a Proof compared to my coin. Pretty sure mine is struck much sharper than a typical 1964 proof.

Hi Jimmy - don't give up on looking for DDO / DDRs on the 60s nickels. They are amongst the most available out there in circulation. It just takes a bit of time to dial in the eye, but it'll happen if you stay with it. I'm still thinking you came across an AU/AU+ roll of 1964 nickels. Fun to get a whole roll especially if you can find a few DDs in the mix. I came across several rolls worth of 60s nickels a few weeks back. In the mix I found several AU DDOs and DDRs, with a few both DDO / DDR (1962). Just need to keep the eyes open and get a bit lucky! Good luck on the hunt!

Thanks Rackster I'm gonna hunt down a good coin shop for some input but ya, either way, I'll at least get to pick the best for my collection.

The rims might be the giveaway on these: They look wider like the proof nickels have.

Have you looked at my pics Coop? I think it has about the same, if not a little bit wider of a rim. The comparison pic I last posted is mine on the left and a 64 Proof on the right. The Strike looks sharper on mine than the proof up close. Yet it seems the dies were polished like crazy on mine causing the ripples and marks, making it appear weak at a distance. It's certainly a strange nickel, but I could be favoring that theory for obvious reasons..

Thanks for that picture BTW I didn't come across that in my search. I feel 50/50 on your response lol was that saying I may have something or that I'm an idiot? Looking at the rim, I immediately thought proof, but I can at least see it's obviously not a BU Mirrored Proof too..I'm stumped. I'll be taking them to the dealer on Friday. Hopefully returning with some good news.

Don't be surprised that he knows nothing about this subject.
I found these images from HeritageCoins.com This coin was graded 1964 SMS Nickel. (Some reason their site doesn't let the images open for me anymore? (I just snagged these from the thumbnail)

Ya I was having the same issue with some on their site so I stopped looking. Would you suggest calling around for someone who would know then? Do you think it would be worth it to send to a TPG?

I would wait for now. Wait till we know for sure if you have something, or you just have a nickel? Ok. I found another image pairing. A 1967-compared with a 1971-S Nickel: Ok, so the SMS nickel doesn't have the proof rims. I can see that with a side by side.

The 1965 SMS does however. I would assume it safe to say the 65 would be what they were modeling the SP '64 for?

Honestly Coop, I have a few of these, and if they pan out to be the real deal and you can help, I'll mail you one for the collection. I'll wait for now and see what we can dig up, but I honestly appreciate you even bothering to use your knowledge to help me out on this. They're quite the oddity.
