This first one is a 1965.It has been well worn and dipped in acid from what it looks like too Me.(?)It's a VLDS and the dies probably should of been retired long ago.IHMO

There doesn't seem to be any break in the luster going around the rim,on either side,as if it were beaten down.IDK?It does have hits going around the outside of the reeding though.
Any thoughts,or comments welcome!

I think you hit it right on the head: they are a couple of messed up dimes I agree with acid on the first one. The second one is certainly VLSD but I'm wondering about the rim: Did it come flawed from the mint? Part of the unusual metal flow could be due to a broad strike which would also account for the lack of rim on the one side.

Anybody else?

I don't think there's much to get excited about over either coin. I've noticed that a lot of 1985 coins I find have weakness in the rims like this, or as you put it, unusual metal flow. It is a neat looking coin, but I'd send it on its way.

Hehehe!I'm just trying broaden My knowledge base a little.I know they are only worth ten cents and I'll probably send them back out into the wild.In other words,I'll give 'em too the Wife. But,then again,I may just keep the '85 because of the ":)" in between One and Dime.
The '85 is the same size as other dimes.Wouldn't a broad strike make the coin a larger diameter?BTW it does have reeding around the edge.

Could it possibly be that its a grease strike-through?Grease not allowing the metal to flow up and fill the rim?

The raised bumps on the rim is edge contact that made that area bulge out because it was damaged in that area.

The area above DIME shows the devices wider. this happens because only a portion of the device was fill with grease. It prevents the die from forming the thin part of these devices that normally taper to the top. When the device is fully filled, then that device looks blank or missing that device.
