Hey everyone, I was hoping some of you experts here could help me conclude whether this 1986 American Silver Eagle I picked up the other day is a real proof, or a fake.

It passed the magnet test, the diameter is exactly 40.6mm, however the weight was 31.65g rather than 31.1g.

Since the coin slightly curves inwards, I was also getting readings either less or more than 2.98mm for thickness. Higher than 2.98 when it was on the thickest part of the edge.

I picked it up at the rate of a standard (not proof) ASE and so I'm not sure if I lucked out or got taken ;)

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this!

Welcome to the forum!

A picture of the reverse would be helpful. Based on what I can see with the obverse nothing is screaming "fake" to me.

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks! Happy to be a part of the community!

And thank you both for your thoughts. I've uploaded a photo of the reverse for a better review.

Does anything look fishy here?

I picked it up off a guy from Craigslist along with some standard 2010-2012 ASE's and Maples.

Seems neither of us realized it was a proof. I'm new to collecting and was wondering why it looked different.

2010-2014's were priced at $18 USD
1986 proof above was priced at $23 USD

A pleasant surprise followed by concern after realizing it was a proof lol

Not bad given the current spot of silver.

The proof is worth double what you paid. Nice! Plus, the other eagles are going for around $5 more than what you paid
