PCGS - The following news releases issued by Professional Coin Grading Service chronicles Baltimore collector Chuck Link's 30-year journey in assembling what the grading service identifies as the first complete set of Capped Bust half dollars by Overton variety with each coin graded and encapsulated by PCGS

The final coin of the massive 453-coin Overton set reached the grading room of Professional Coin Grading Service, capping off a collector's search that spanned three decades.

Chuck Link of Baltimore, Maryland, recently submitted a 1829 0.120, completing his Capped Bust half dollars Prime Die Variety set by Overton, Circulation Strikes (1807-1836) on the PCGS Set Registry. Link's set also includes three Crushed Lettered Edge Proofs, bringing the total to 453 coins.

The-Complete-Overton:-A-30-Year-Quest-For-453-Capped-Bust-Half-Dollars

These Capped Bust half dollars, detailed in the 1967 book Early Half Dollar Die Varieties 1794-1836 by Al C. Overton, are highly sought after, especially among variety collectors.

Overton's chronicle of Capped Bust half dollar varieties inspired many collectors throughout the decades to seek out coins to complete the set, in which collectors can obtain one representative for each of the "master" numbers.

Link's set contains every Overton variety and is the first complete set graded by PCGS.

The goal of completing the coveted Overton set started in 1986 for Link and finally concluded by way of an unlikely online discovery.

Link was put in contact with a seller who cherry picked the rare 1829 0.120 at a fraction of its value and bought the coin from him.

"It was discovered on ebay as a new variety. My understanding is that it cost less than $100 on ebay as a cherry. One of the greatest cherries ever," said Link.

Link, eager to complete his set and aware that there are only three of these coins known, quickly bought the coin, which was graded VF25 by PCGS.

Link's Overton set was complete, and after 30 years of painstaking search, it contains many of the finest known examples of specific dates and varieties of the coin, with an average coin grade of MS63.

One of Link's early inspirations that led him to complete a set of such fine Overton examples was a set by PCGS President Don Willis, who was a coin dealer at the time. Willis' Premium AU58 RedBook set caught Link's eye early in his three-decade-long journey.

"That was a lot of fun putting that set together," said Willis. "I think it was a good example of how beautiful these coins can be."

Aside from his groundbreaking Overton set, Link is the proud owner of multiple number 1-ranked sets across PCGS Set Registry. But that does not mean Link will slow down after this achievement.

"There's still more collecting to do," said Link. "But my first love has always been the Capped Bust Halves."

i don't even know if "amazing" sums it up. Think about 30 years gone by and each day of those 10,950 days having some amount of time allocated and dedicated towards something that you never know is even attainable. There must have been days where thoughts of giving up seemed easier than pressing forward. I am beyond impressed with this.

And 30 years ago you couldn't hop online and browse ebay or google "1829 Overton 120 for sale"...much tougher to put together these kind of sets pre-Internet.

excellent point Paralyse
imagine not being able to browse thousands of coins with button presses for the first 20 years of this venture. I would love to know what percentage of the set was completed pre-2006 versus the past decade. My guess is 30% prior to online.

I concur. If not for the internet, this set may certainly have been unobtainable in one lifetime.

I would have to guess that this guy is an early member of the Bust Half Nut Club, you need at least 100 die marriages to be considered for membership. The club would have also been a pre-internet source for some of the tougher varieties through B/S/T lists.

I'm really angry that Chuck just beat me out in this competition. I was so close as I have 40 of these - I was just a few hundred coins away from winning. I'm sure I could have beat him if I had a long weekend to buy a few hundred more coins.

Oh, reading further - his average grade was MS63? Is that better than VF25? Yikes...

N o it was possible preinternet. This gentleman is the second person to put together the full set and the other did it pre internet. (Or at most very early internet) His is the first Registry set.

I can not imagine how hard putting that set together really was.

After getting ..say 90% ... I would think about everyone he looked st
he would ... Got that one.

And the thought of the average as PCGS MS 63 .... Thais just crazy.

I could take years just looking at a collection like that.

If you look closely at the reverse of Chuck's 1829 o.120, its reverse is a later die state of same reverse used for 1831 o.104. My 1831 o.104 is definitely an earlier die state of said reverse.

However, the Leaman Gunnet emission order has 1829 o.120 just before 1831 o.104. Emission order numbers 348 and 349, respectively.

Interesting, eh?

Opinions?
