Robbing safe deposit boxes is very rare, but it DOES happen. Now wait until most of the owners of the boxes learn that the bank does not carry insurance on the contents of the boxes and that if the box renters don't carry their own insurance they are out of luck. Because I bet most of the box contents are NOT insured. Why? Because everyone thinks "It's safe in the bank vault." Or they think the bank insures them (They never really read the agreement they signed when they rented the box.).

I couldn't believe the last paragraph! This was the 10th time this has happened!?!?!?
They ought to pick up a few battery operated motion detectors to scatter on the roof.

Quote: Who insures bank box contents? Are you asking what person would think to do so, or what insurance company would do it? Person would be anyone who realizes that the bank doesn't and they don't want to take any risk. Companies, you can usually get coverage through your homeowners insurance, and for you coins, Hugh Woods will cover them. Rates tend to be very low because safe deposit box robberies ARE very rare.

I don't want my homeowners insurance company, I want someone that specializes in collectables. Hugh Woods looks interesting. I'll give them a call and get a quote.

Hugh Woods is clearly it. They are the ANAs official insurer and one of the principals is a stamp collector. They understand collectors well and have vault only as well as "take home" or "store home" policies. Rates are a few hundred for $100K collection. Has anyone here ever filed a claim with them?

I saw a report a day or two ago and the guy said they didn't give him any problems, just took his declaration of the value and he had his check within the month.

Thanks. The ANA has no reviews or feedback to provide to me and suggested I visit their forum. I visit this one instead and get answers.

Wow... I don't trust anyone else but me with my valuables. This just makes up my mind never to invest in safety deposit boxes. Call me paranoid but stuff like this happens to anybody regardless if the criminal even is aware of the contents or not. All this takes is a motivated poor person to take something, they will find a way to do it.

We use Hugh Wood. We have a blanket policy that covers inventory and all outgoing and incoming coins. Contact Nancy Khoury at Hugh Wood. Call the Manhattan office and ask for her. Tell her Susan at CCF Numismatics sent you.

Good news for a change! However they don't mention if any of the loot was recovered. Quote: Guess no one thought about putting a camera in the room... Maybe not... Quote: Evidence in the case will include surveillance footage of the men as they prepared for and carried out the burglaries, as well as video surveillance of two of the men buying supplies used in one of the burglaries, authorities said.

I bet there isn't one Safe Deposit box robbery for every thousand home break-ins.
I looked into insurance, and the rate was something like 1.25% per year of the insured value, with a .5% discount for items in a Safe Deposit box. I don't recall who the insurer was.
There is no such thing as perfect security. For the price, I think a Safe Deposit box in a bank vault is the most cost effective protection there is.
