Can you post a pic of the reverse?

It looks like it took a big hit in the chin.

I'm thinking Grease Filled Die. The rim looks too sharp, I think, for it to be a weak strike.

I feel there were three events happening to this die. 1. Rust (seen more on reverse) 2. Die Deterioration and 3. very heavy die polishing.

I could swear I saw this 10c on the bay, yesterday.
I was searching '15 errors. seeing what I'm not aware of.
This was simply advertised as Die Deterioration.

Wow, thanks for looking at it thoroughly Coop. My mom took it out of a roll of dimes, and noticed the date was barely there to the naked eye. I'm new to coin collecting and very curious.

Just die wear. This is what I've termed "design devouring die wear". The field retreats as far as the deepest and narrowest portions of the letters.

I like that term Mike. Seems like there were several examples posted here that show how bad this was this year.

I've got a number of examples, some even more severe. This form of die wear also appears in America the Beautiful Quarters.

Unfortunately, a server crash removed all but thumbnail images. I'll try to post some later today.
