When I bought the tough $5 NA a few months back in 65, I broke my own rule and jumped in even though I really wanted a 66. Should have waited - just found this $5 in 66 for less than I paid for the 65 in the first place!

Awesome examples frog.

The North African notes are one of my all time small-size favorites......there's something about the blue and yellow on these Silver Certificates that really screams eye appeal. Very nice sir, very nice.

Thanks. These are probably even more common than their Hawaii counterparts, block pairs side. But again, as a type note, they are a good value I think.

I have always wondered why the BEP simply changed the seal color on the NA notes, but changed the seal color AND added the overprints on the Hawaii issues.

Anybody have an idea?

I have heard and read that the U.S. Government feared a Japanese takeover of the Hawaiian Islands (Territory), and the front and rear overprint could be easily recognized if the currency needed to be denominated .

I suppose a simple brown seal could have been confused with an NBN or FRBN from the same era, so thus the overprint. But why go through two processes - why not just overprint regular green-seal FRNs from the same series?

Great set Frog. Do you have the same requirements for the Hawaii notes? Personally, I like them better, with the Hawaii overprint, plus there is also the $20.

I get your logic but personally I'm glad they didn't do that!

Celtic - Me too, but I'll always wonder why - the design decisions on the NA and Hawaii notes were so different, even though carried out at basically the same time.

Hi mfhorn - My standards should be the same, but right now I have a pile of two dozen PMG, CGA and raw Hawaii notes that I need to consolidate.

The North Africa/Sicily notes have always seemed a bit odd to me. The Hawaii overprint makes a lot of sense - life was going on there at full blast during the war, and US currency was the everyday medium of exchange. But in North Africa, I've never really understood how the notes were used - I would guess that most soldiers had much of their pay sent back stateside, and of course MPCs were probably in regular use. These notes were not local currency, so what was the need for so many to be printed? Thoughts?

Coinfrog; Here's what I found.
The North Africa yellow seal notes, however, were specifically designed for soldiers serving on the continent of Africa during our involvement in World War II. These notes were brought over by soldiers for the purchasing of toiletries and personal supplies. The reason for the yellow seal, instead of the regular blue, was so that the Germans, upon capturing soldiers with the yellow seal notes, couldn't counterfeit large sums of money and devalue our economic status.

After the US was no longer considered to be "occupying" a country, our soldiers were stationed there to protect our interests. This is when Military Payment Certificates were created.

Understand, thanks. But where would troops spend this currency - at PXs and Navy canteens? Couldn't have been many Rite-Aids in Morocco back then.
