I have read that it is illegal to own a 1974 penny? If it is made from Aluminum? Yet I read somewhere that a man had this aluminum coin and sold it. Here's hoping I have one. Thank you for your opinions.

what are the weights of your coins? 3.1 g would be copper, aluminum would be significantly lighter.

for the the legality of the aluminum coin you should search the forum, there are numerous threads about it.

The cents pictures look copper to me. Is there some reason you are thinking they might be aluminum .

Thank you for your opinions, I have read some other people's opinions and some believe they can look like copper and others say they are grey. I don't think anything yet, but now I will go and buy a coin scale.

Just started a couple of months ago going through coins. I just signed up on this site to get a little help, I'm not knowledgeable in coin collecting. So thank you all for your input, it is appreciated.

There are only two known specimens out of only a handful given out. Almost all of the 1.5 million struck were melted down.

There were 4.2 billion 1974 cents struck in copper, so your chances of finding one are probably lower than winning the Powerball.

Copper changes color. Cents leave the mint a nice bright red copper color. They will only stay that color if they are protected from the environment.

I have seen thousands of copper and aluminum coins, in various stages of wear/ corrosion. I have never seen aluminum ones look like copper or vice versa. Not naturally at any rate.
