Hey everyone, I'm still a new collector finishing up my education starting my collection. I'm looking to buy a new coin in the range of $150-200. I'm interested in US coins, particularly draped bust anything, 20 cent pieces, and any other suggestions! I'd like my coin for my collection and also as maybe a long term investment. I plan on holding these for 30+ years so hopefully something that'll be worth more then. Will I get a better deal raw vs certified? Thanks for your pointers :-)

Can't go wrong with a common date BU ms65 Morgan....that'll run you between $150-$200.

Unless you know what to look for or have someone help you who does, I would stick to certified. You don't want to get stuck with a cleaned, damaged, or otherwise undesirable coin that will never have a lot of demand.
You can get a certified nice VF 1875-S 20 cent piece in your price range. Or an XF Capped Bust half in the late 1820's and the 1830's dates. Those are always nice.

You can get a decent draped bust Half Cent or cent in that range. Its difficult to get higher grade draped bust of any other denomnination without spending a larger amount of money.

You can get a graded XF Bust Half Dollar in your price range. Look for a problem free coin with original surface with eye appeal and it will hold its value. I also like the silver content in the half dollar for the future.

Quote: Can't go wrong with a common date BU ms65 Morgan....that'll run you between $150-$200. But the value has been steadily going down as more are certified in that grade. Both a 20¢ and a draped bust half are good choices. Their value won't go down. However, in your price range, buy the coin you can get in a higher grade, which in this case is the VF 20¢.

How much should I look to pay for a vf 20c coin? Or a draped bust half in g/vg?

How about a couple of common date certified MS-65 walkers . Or a few common date certified MS-65 Mercs. with FSB . I don't think you'll go wrong taking this route .

I would go with a nice certified bust half dollar or a nice certified Trade dollar.

Why not split the $200 into to or three different $70 certified coins? You can usually get a MS-64 Morgan for that

A VF 20c coin should be available for $160. Don't buy G/VG coins. If VF and better coins are not in your price range, find something else to collect.

May I ask why it's not worth getting g/vg?

I have no problem with G and VG coins, but I am not in this for investment. If the coin looks good to me and fits the set, I will get it.

In terms of numismatic investment, the rare coins get rarer, the common coins stay common. Make sure you buy best value for money at the time of purchase, and do your price research thoroughly; that's easy with a keyboard.

Should be able to get a decent looking 20 cent piece in the $150-200 range. These loose a lot of detail when heavily worn so you would probably want the most detail you can afford. Low grade common date coins in G-VG are usually not "collector" grade and will likely not do well if resold due to a lot of collectors wanting better grade coins.

I see all sorts of prices online but I try to find them to actually purchase and they are much higher. I don't have a lcs so ebay is only option. I'll just keep hunting
