I was at White Castle today getting lunch. There was an older gentleman in line before me (it was only him, me and my wife in the whole place). He had on a belt and across the back there were 12-14 silver dollars attached from hip to hip. I told him I liked his belt and asked if the coins were real or replicas. He said they were real! I saw at least 3 Seated dollars and two Trade dollars, along with Morgan and Peace dollars on that belt.

I told him he had some seriously valuable coins worth hundreds of dollars each on there and asked him if he collected. He said he did in the 70's, sold quite a lot of his collection but kept the dollars. Said he had another belt with a BUST DOLLAR on it as well. Unbelievable. All I could think was all the people who would just love to have these in their collection. But I also get it - they were his coins and this is how he enjoyed them.

We spent quite awhile talking coins - what he could buy coins for in the 70's - for example, common silver dollars for $2.80. I told him about my collection and then the sliders (that's the food for those unfamiliar with White Castle) were ready and it was time to eat.

I would never have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.

I bet he enjoys them as much or more than those that have them hidden away in albums!

Great story.

I saw a belt buckle with a Bust Dollar in it, but the dollar was fake. I suppose you could find a decent coin with a horrid reverse and put it in a belt buckle. Maybe it could be done for $600 or so.

Wow, impressive. Glad he left the belt with the bust dollar at home though...holy cow.

That thought crossed my mind but there are certain things you do not ask someone you just met and this is one of them.

I still can't get over how nice these coins were - not worn out slicks by any means - high VF, some maybe better. One of the Trade dollars looked nicer than the one in my 7070 I think.

Cool. Wish I would happen upon his estate sale after he passes.

From a numismatic standpoint most or all are probably details coins though
Rest in Peace

Coins schmoins -- How many sliders did you eat?

The most I ever ate at one sitting was 6.

During my youth I would drive an hour or more to get those.

I got the Combo #1 which is 4 sliders (I added cheese), fries and a Coke. We had a buy one get one free coupon so my wife got the same thing minus the cheese. She took two of hers home though. We will have to see what happens to those two abandoned burgers...

When I was younger my typical meal was ten. Now I seldom do more than five at a time. Growing up there were three White Castles within five miles of my home. Today the closest one is fifty miles away so I only get them once a month. We pass it on our way to a coin club meeting. They've gotten a lot more expensive though, I used to get them for 12 cents apiece. My father used to get them for a nickel.

I will usually get 6 if I don't get fries although 4 and an onion chips is also good. My wife's family has a tradition of getting White Castle for lunch on Thanksgiving, the story being that the kitchen was off limits that day and nothing else used to be open on Thanksgiving back then. I think partly my father in law just liked White Castles. We still typically do that, especially when we are hosting Thanksgiving.

There is no way anyone could possibly eat the quantity of White Castles that Harold and Kumar ordered at the end of that movie. Maybe Joey Chestnut.
