It's not the horse, it's the frog. Mr. Wexler says it's Die Deterioration. The good news is we can learn a good lesson here. The reason it resembles a Doubled Die so much is because the die erodes on the letters, date, etc., first. "Since the greatest erosion is around the design elements such as the letters, date, etc. the new raised areas resemble doubling." I'm thinking there is only so much planchet metal to go around. Well it was a confusing one to me. The lip area looked just the a DDO, but it was missing other areas affected. The cheek area made me wonder if it were MD as the metal looked moved there. Also the motto showed some MD.

Yes, it was confusing, like you said, it should have appeared in an earlier die state. I thought maybe it was missing the other area affected because of grease on the ear (the 1966 was affected there also). The flow was on the vertical lines. I am not about to beat a dead horse though. It definitely is what it is, a unique example of Die Deterioration.
All the help and consideration is much appreciated. I will go on to the next one.
