It looks more like it took a hit on that area. Note the mark NE from the 8? It may have been damaged in a vending machine? These were very popular about that time. Bum balls, peanuts and other things were sold from them, damaging coins along the way.

Unfortunately, I agree with coop. The outer edge of the coin looks consistent with the smudge, which suggests PMD.

Yeah unfortunately that's no mint error. The last digit on cents sometimes look a little smudged because they're closer to the rim where the coin rubs against things. You can also see in this particular case that there is sort of a ring of wear just along the rim, and that part of the "8" comes in contact with it. It's still a Wheat cent so it's probably worth keeping if you found that in circulation. You've got a selective eye!

Did you hear any info on that 1948 Wheat penny Billy James B. Or Is it that all the 1948 wheat pennys have the same bubble ball damage that obviously just effects the number 8. I have the same 1948. Kinda weird huh.

There are quite a few what they call a poor mans Doubled Die. I have a few 35's, 55's and even one 1965. All caused by Die Deterioration. I think it might be a little mechanical as well as Die Deterioration. I am leaning towards Die Deterioration and here's why, there is a slight raised ring that goes through that area.

Back then you could buy not just gumballs in machines. You could buy spanish or Virginia peanuts and cashews as well from a vending machines for one cent.
