Hello everyone!
I'm new to coin collecting and was wondering if someone could help me with this coin.
It's a 1970 lincoln that has something behind its head, neck and bust.
I know it's not the prettiest coin but I'm very curious how this happened.

Isolated die polishing. It wore away that part of the die, thus leaving a raised area now on the coin struck. I've seen this a few times, but yours looks like the strongest one I've seen. Just an abraded die.

Thank you very much!
I'm assuming that this type of error isn't worth to much, correct?

Even if it's not I think I'm still keeping it since it's the first of its kind I've found.
Rest in Peace

There's probably no premium value for this coin but if coop says it's the strongest he's seen, I'd keep it for sure.

I agree with no premium. But most of the time they are not as strong as that one. But I wouldn't keep it. Give me a EDS coin and I'm a lot more happier than with worn die stuff.

I have a 1972 or a 1972-D like that. I kept it cause it looks neat.

Could someone explain what this is? To me it looks no different than a dirty coin with discoloration from exposure to whatever.

There was a clash behind the bust of lincoln, they polished only that away, it is called isolated die polishing.

The edge of the die that tapers down into the deeper area, has been ground down on that side of the die. Thus the coins show a raised area there with the altered roughness present.

We all share what we know. All are glad to do it. All are glad to learn more when something new comes along. One way to get the best out of the forum is to look at the first post. Decide what you see. Write it down if you like and then, read the others comments. See if you were correct and look at the comments. I try to explain what I see, and why it is what it is. Do this for a while and you will see that you are learning. But every once in a while, you will get a curve ball. then add new information to what you already have.

As already stated seems to be just a die event. Just I've not seen one quite this extreme before. Think it has a bit of a wow factor courtesy of the US Mint. Thanks, Doug.
