I currently have a thread in the US Coin Forum discussing Morgans; in it is pictured a 1921-P VAM-41 I was able to cherrypick the other week. Last week on ebay, I found and snagged what I thought was going to be another Pitted Reverse 1921; possibly a VAM-1E, I hoped. The coin arrived today, and to my surprise it was yet another VAM-41. NGC slabbed it. What grade do you think they assigned?   |

Is that wear on the ear to the eyebrow? AU50/58. The obverse has a lot of damage. Is this visible to the naked eye? What's the eye-appeal on this? Hard to tell from a picture.

I'm not a Morgan collector, but I think all I'm seeing are heavy bag marks on the obverse. I'm going to guess MS62-63.

Ok, I'll bite. I think this is actually a pretty nice mint state coin. I would venture a guess at MS63. Unfortunately there are the marks under the U and S on the obverse. Of course it looks like her cheek and neck took a little beating, but the fields look awesome! Couple of nicks on the eagles chest it looks like, but otherwise pretty clean. Maybe a MS62 net grade, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a 63 out of this one. Of course, I'm not an expert grader....  |

My guess is MS-62...is there any premium for the VAM? |

Looks mint state to me, and smooth enough for a '63. If it's in an MS-62 slab I'd call it choice for the grade.

There's a point to be made here. Coins are graded actual size, not based on 800px macro images. It's something I constantly battle when trying to grade here. Just for comparison, here's the other new VAM-41, in a PCGS MS63 slab:   |

I was actually going to ask you how it looked in hand. I know all too well how good your photography is, and the clarity it shows. Sometimes I think your "nicks and marks" or chatter in your photos are the sheer crispness of the lens and hardware you are using. I actually started typing my first review of this at a MS64, with awesome fields, but when I clicked and enlarged the photos, I thought I saw more stuff going on.... You need a diffuser on that lens of yours to give us an idea of what it would look like with the optics that are in our head instead of a crystal clear Nikon lens......  |

Im just wondering, how would a coin possessing this VAM differ in price from a coin with a regular die? By the way, the pictures are excellent. |

VAM-41, although striking, is pretty common and doesn't attract much attention until MS63 or so. When I flip it, I expect the 63 to break $100 - it's in a PCGS OGH and even with my pictures will attract those who believe that OGH=automatic upgrade. The one that started this thread, though....that's another matter. The slab for this one says MS64. In-hand, it's all of MS64, regardless of how harshly my photography may treat it. There are only two VAM-41's in a higher grade, one NGC and one ANACS. This coin is not going on ebay - I'll be offering it in a more appropriate venue. |

Where would you sell a coin like this? ( the 64 ) and how much could you get out of the 64?

Based on what I have read so far and without looking at the rest of the opinions here I would say MS 63/64 Leaning more toward 64 but the breast feathers look borderline for 64.
Please remember I am a complete newbie at this stuff.

I'm thinking the 64 will be consigned to the next VAMQuest auction; possibly Heritage. I've another 1921-D VAM which is Top Pop for the VAM and a gorgeous coin; they'll make a nice pair on the block. As to price, I couldn't estimate. It'll be significantly better than normal, though. |
