Sometimes I wonder about why I buy one coin over another.

I seem to go from filling empty holes in my albums,
to buying bullion related coins.

I was offered this coin at a good price, so I had to say yes

I also wonder if others can really say focused on collecting
one series, or do you more often, just buy what ever comes along ..

Very pretty coin

I too normally buy what comes along but in the lulls I find a set to focus on. These past few years it's been large cents for me.

Very nice!

As long as you are still chipping away at your sets, go for it.

I've never been interested in collecting series, so this has never been an issue for me. I started out collecting whatever caught my eye, then started focusing on my type album. After that, I started working on a proof type set. In the meantime, I've "invested" (that's the excuse I give my wife) in some slabbed key date coins (1909S VDB Lincoln Cent, 1932D Washington quarter, 1921 Peace dollar, etc.). And, although I'm primarily interested in "classic" coins, I do like to pick up whatever special mint set comes out each year, such as the 25th Anniversary American Silver Eagle set and the latest 2016 Centennial Gold Coins.

Nice AGE, GR58.

To your question, I like to collect complete sets (or as complete as resources will allow) vs individual coins, and I find myself bouncing around from set to set as time goes on as my level of interest in certain sets wanes and waxes.

For instance, I'm currently "focusing" on my $1 FRN, Zimbabwe notes, and Kennedy half dollar sets. Where before it was Lincoln cents, Jefferson nickels, and Roosevelt dimes. All of which are in various stages of completion.

I used to bounce around a lot in my buying which has resulted in my collection having many more series of coins than I ever intended. Thanks to a CCF member that posted a thread about setting goals for this year I am much more focused. I have accomplished 4 of the 10 goals I set and with some luck I can accomplish the other 6 by the end of the year. I don't know what goals I will set for next year, I like to complete my sets and I don't have that many left. Maybe I will start the Franklin half set I have been thinking about.

Good point, Oldephriam, and thanks for reminding me about that thread. I am looking at the piece of paper I have my 2016 goals written down upon, and, while I've adjusted some of them over the past 8 months, I've knocked down a quarter of them and another 3 will easily be done by end of year.

And as I look at my previous post here in this thread, all, the collections I'm currently working on are listed ($1 FRN, $Z, and Kennedy halves). Maybe that's why I'm making good progress on those sets....

I am seeing some good point being made here.

I have to wonder, if at a certain point, when all the
easier sets are complete, is it harder to say focused.

Or do I just have to many sets going at the same time.

For me the modern coins, I have completed and with some
I have multiples sets.

Many of the classics I am down to needing key date coins.

I do enjoy completing sets ... maybe I really have to
make a good list for next year ... and see which sets
might have a chance of getting filled.

Has anyone ever got to the point where they have all the
sets completed, that they want to do ... then what?

I recently have been just getting coins that are appealing to me and not working on my "sets". Today I ordered the gold standing Liberty, didn't need it just wanted it. Your new 1/10 is cool, I like the Roman numerals and have a 1988 one ounce proof.
