Hello everyone. I have a number of decimal mint rolls of various denominations dating from the eighties. Some rolls have the reverse visible at both ends, so I do not know the year of the roll. They used to be in labelled bags, but, sadly, no longe. Are there any suggestions, or best ways to 'peek' into the roll, turn one coin around, and retain maximum value for the (remaining) roll? Can they be re-rolled?

Not if they're mint rolls. If they came from one of the security companies (like Chubb or Armaguard), you could break them open, check the date, and re-roll them without losing value.

However, the mint isn't a security company, so they don't re-roll coins, which means you'd lose the original mint packaging if that's what they came with. This would automatically decrease their value.

If you do have mint rolls, you might want to consider giving them an MRI (at considerable expense to you), because that might be the only way to determine the date without breaking them open.

This is just my gut feeling based on what I know about rolls, so please check with other members of this forum just to be sure.

I noticed on the Oz. coin Forum a poster unpicking one end with a dental pick but it takes some skill to unroll the end.Stating the obvious but extreme buyer beware with ebay Coin Rolls as there are auto Coin Rollers in the public domain, all they need is genuine wrappers to create a copy that may,or may not, contain the Coins advertised.

Good point, Basil.
On another note, don't original mint wrappers usually have a date printed on them?

Thanks. It wasn't really my plan to attempt to re-roll them anyway.
I take your point, Hercules, about them losing value by opening them, but I guess they don't have much value unopened if you cannot see the date. I will open them carefully and see what I've got. Thanks all.

Double reverse MINT rolls often sell for the same price or better. That is the unknown factor. In the same way there may be gems inside. So date is not ALWAYS the most important factor. It's a gamble that some people are quite willing to take.
