Here's a nice die break I found in a BU roll of 2007 Lincolns. It's pretty cool to see a big group of these. If you want some, perhaps we can arrange a trade for something? Edited by KurtS 03/12/2008 01:18 am

Very nice one KurtS! Headed on it way to become a Cud when the die splits. You could see the break/chip/crack extending from the rim. Nice find. A great photographic example to show all three.

Coop- I think I've notice some difference between coins. If I see some progression, it might make an interesting photo, especially w/ a Cud! Do you think a roll of these (BU) has any collector interest?

Although I would be first in line to trade for one, I think you should keep them together as a set and keep looking for more. Those are cool.

I would sell them when you find a buyer for them. ebay would be a good place. As for price I would say there is no extra priemum for die cracks, but your is a large one and would command a little premium. But I would sell them one at a time. If you unload to many at once the bottom falls out of the market for them. I to would be interested in one for educational purposes. I've got a lot of trades.

Just the other day, I went through a box of pennies, I found the same coin that kurt has, but the crack is more severe,it goes up to lincoln in the monument.

Remember people that there are hundreds of dies used every year to mint coins. The chances that two of you have the same die is rather remote. These cracks are the result of the die breaking at weak points that ALL the dies have. Just because there are two coins with die cracks in the same area doesn't mean they are the same crack.
Just remember that.

Kurt, it might be fun to ID some markers on the coins and send pics to alcoz for comparison.

Anyone know where Denver keeps their dies? Maybe if we knew, we, too could enjoy shonwig our new finds! I don't even care if the crack is on the front, or back, or even on both! Dick

Jim, there's an idea! I won't assume to know how to assign markers, but that closeup is at full resolution, so perhaps that's some use? I'm sure ever die crack is slightly different. Dick, perhaps those dies are under "lock and key"?

Now why would they do a thing like that? No one knows what a die is, and if the had one they wouldn't know what to do with it! die cracks have always been one of the things I have kept, since day one, I have a lit of them in a lot of different coins, foreign, as well as domestic. The State quartes series has a lot on the base of the bust. Many go from the rim on one side and nearly to the rim on the other end. (about 1/8th of the rim area, below the bust, on either side, and at timesm, both. I started saving them, and the plating errors when they first came out.I wanted to find enough to make a progression of cracks, as long as possible. The only problem, if I decide to locate all of them, my date/roll set of quarters would go down the drain! Dick
