This 25 pfennig note originated with the municipality of Stützerbach in Thuringia. It's diminutive at 58 x 80 mm but really rather nicely done, including a tiny embossing of a conifer (which also appears as an element of Stützerbach's coat of arms). It's a testament to the chaotic ubiquity of notgeld in the early 1920's that such a small, out of the way place participated in its issuance (even today, the population of Stützerbach is under 1,500). Apparently Stützerbach has long been a "health resort" destination. It looks to be a lovely little community in a rustic setting. See: http://www.stuetzerbach.de/ Colligo ergo sum

The German text at the bottom left is a really poetic (and slightly humorous) reference to the wood grouse at upper left and hunter at bottom right. Seems the motif was inspired by the pictured 'Gasthaus zum Auerhahn' (apparently still there, now the Waldgasthaus Auerhahn) so it's also a rebus of sorts. Clever and interesting.
A lot of artistry -- and poetry, perhaps fitting with the Goethe connections -- for a 25 pfennig note!

A beautiful note Lucky Cuss! Do you have a large notgeld collection?

Quote: Do you have a large notgeld collection? No, I just occasionally pick them up whenever a particularly intriguing one turns up. I can see the appeal of seriously collecting them, though, as they're generally very inexpensive, and the variety is immense.

I missed this when you originally posted it. Nice notgeld! I will have to start keeping an eye out for them.

Notgeld is a dangerous field to get into. I got a modest collection once but now have thousands. Endlessly fascinating and for the most part, rather modestly priced. Your best bet is to get them in bulk from Germany.

I have come to understand that not all "notgeld" is necessarily "emergency money", that it's actually rather become a generic term for notes issued during the period for a variety of reasons. So my question for this particular note is whether it'd be technically "serienscheine" that was something more along the lines of a souvenir or promotional item?

While I am not an expert (yet!) it is my understanding that this indeed would be considered seirenscheine. I say this for two reasons:
1. The great detail and visual appeal of the subject matter 2. The small denomination

And the 1921 date of issue. Yes, it is Serienscheine.
