Have you ever seen a coin that was graded and looked at the image and spotted strong machine damage to the coin? You wondered that they might have really messed up on this one? But strong machine damage can also over shadow a hub doubled die. I spotted one of these the other day and it took a while of searching for information to see that it is really is the number they slabbed it with. So I wondered, how many here would buy a machine damaged doubled die? I would probably pass on them because if would cloud the beauty of the doubled die. But this also gives us a chance to learn more about Machine Doubling (I prefer damage as there really nothing is doubled, but it is damaged by the dies after the strike)

So hang on, were are going to learn about how the color change on MD coins will help us spot them quicker for what they are.

Wow. What an example. Where do we start. Note the information this image to help to see what to look for on color change on MD and doubled dies. I marked the MD with arrows and hub doubling with red arrows. So let continue the journey.

I hope this thread will help you to note the color change on doubled dies and the same color on Machine Doubling as it leave a flatten device that is reduced in size. I new this one would be a great subject for discussion on this forum. We often think of machine damage just on normal coins, but the happen to doubled dies as well. So what do you think? Would you buy a MD variety?

Rest in Peace

Wow!

Yeah, I'd buy it in a heartbeat -- if it came with your pictures and text.

It's the kind of coin that I could study for hours and then have a lot of fun showing it to my coin club friends.

As always, thanks for the education.
