I have no idea of whether this is normal, an 'error coin', just an 'oddity' or something of more value than the normal. So, please feel free to educate me. I dug this metal detecting in Houston about a week ago.

Thanks

Mint mark tilts do not generally command a premium.

Nice find.

First .. good find .. always nice finding silver ..
Barber silver is bonus ..

Mint marks were hand punched onto the die. So it was common
that they were not always in the same position. You can find
mint marks high, low or tilted left or right.

Thanks, I appreciate the help. Tough finding really old stuff around Houston, but I have managed a 1799 1/2 Reale and an 1854 Seated dime and quarter, and lately guys have dug a couple of 3 cent coins and 2 Half Dimes. Pre 1850 is tough to find. I retired in 2002, FAA air traffic controller and later manager, 35 years, and dirt fishing keeps me healthy. Managed to dig a little over 26,000 coins in the last 4 years and about 630 silvers. A tremendous amount of demolitions of older homes and businesses going on here so there is always 3 to 10-15 new dig sites every day.

Thanks again for the info.

The mint marks were hand punched. So however the mint mark landed as long as it was in the target area, it was OK/normal. When there was a problem with punching it over a previous punch, then it is interesting as it may be a RPM. But not on your coin. Sorry

Adding to coop's post, mintmark SIZE can also occasionally be a value factor to some degree.
