The people who count the offerings at the church where I serve as pastor know I'm a coin collector and a couple of them keep an eye open for anything interesting that might show up in the offering plates.

Today one of them came up to me and gave me this well-worn 1926 Lincoln Cent.

I want everyone to know that I replaced it with a penny from my pocket. You have to keep all things above-board.

I'm thinking that, because it was an early wheatie, you probably should have put back four or five cents - you know, fair market value and all that.

That would have thrown off the counters' tally sheet.

I was thinking about them.

I'm that kind of guy.

You know, I have to agree. For all we know, this congregant knew about your hobby when the offering was made. But I understand the reasoning. Maybe just sneak an extra nickel in there when the plate is passed next week.

I think you're right. Some sort of heavenly-for-earthly conflict here.

I think if the coin predates your church building, you're exempt. Pretty sure I remember a Sunday School lesson on that at some point.
