Bonington's auction house near London will auction one of Britain's rarest coins on Wednesday, November 16. The company is offering to bidders worldwide a coveted Queen Anne "Vigo" 5-guinea gold coin valued at $240,000-$300,000 USD.

I saw this story on the news yesterday. Makes me wonder...didn't the grandfather know it was gold? How did he get it? Did he think it was fake?

Something unmistakeable about gold and that would be one big heavy coin.
If it's the same size as the gold £5 or 5 sovereigns, it would weigh about an ounce. So that happened to the remaining 6.25lbs of Spanish gold?

15 are known from the 20 that were struck, this would be number 16, so only 4 missing

Was minted into single and double guineas, presumably. IIRC the 5 guineas is not the only Vigo denomination.

That said, I'm pretty sure that a 5 guineas from 1703 would be a bit larger than a 5 sovereigns today (partly from inflation between 1703 and whatever it was when the sovereign's weight was set - 1817, I think - and partly from the slightly larger denomination).

It is good to know there are still rare coins sitting
around in little boys treasure chests.
