I hope this question does not seem too silly, but when you are physically storing coins of a given denomination and year, or recording on paper, coins of a given year, which direction do you sort condition by?

For example, say I have a 1948 basic nickel with no varieties and I have it in various grades, would you go AU50, MS62, MS64 or would you do MS64, MS62, AU50?

Part of me wants to go mathematically low to high, but part of me wants to have my best coin first.

There's no rule; it's your personal preference.
But generally it's high to low.

If you go to a coin show and a dealer has several of the same date stacked in his showcase the highest is usually on top.

But when Coin World does its grade description of an issue they go low to high.

I think it is all personal preference.

For me, I would go denomination, then date, then mint mark, and finally condition. So I would only have to choose condition order if I had more than one of the same denomination, date and mint mark...and then I am with your mathematical side...I would go from low to high.
Rest in Peace

I go low to high simply because all of the price guides are in that order. It makes it easier, regardless of which price guide I might be using.

I also sort from low to high grade, since that also correlates with grading guides.

At most coin shows or coin stores, coins are placed so that the better ones are first. Of course this is to sell the more expensive ones first.

This is true. I always ask to see the whole stack so I can get to the lower grade coins (preferred and more affordable).
