Here are my good finds from three hunts on the steep hill behind the library and across from the high school in Port Washington, WI. I found a silver Roosevelt there a few days before these hunts.

I took a week of vacation late last month and had three separate hunts from October 22-25. I found three more silvers, including a 1925-D Mercury dime, a very nice 1937 Buffalo nickel and an 1893 Indian Head cent along with some more Wheat Cents, the oldest being a very worn 1918.

The Mercury dime and the 1962 Roosevelt were both surface finds on the steep slope of the hill.

I would suspect many of these coins were lost by kids heading to the high school in the 1940s-1960s.

The Indian Head was found in a different area of the hill about a block away. It was the only coin I found on this part of the hill.

Congrats on the great finds Paul! I have yet to dig up any silver but I haven't been out there digging much either. If you don't mind me asking, what do you use to clean the soil off the coins? They look great.

Thanks for your comments.

The soil here treats coins very nicely. Usually all it takes is a rinse with water and some scrubbing with a soft nylon brush.

For coins with more dirt on them I will also soak them in hydrogen peroxide.

Silver coins come out of the ground looking like silver coins.

Here is the 1893 Indian Head as it was dug up. When I found it I did give it a quick brush to try and determine the date. I thought it would have a lovely green patina, but it's more a brown with some green after I rinsed it off.

You're right about Buffalos. They are few and far between.

I've been hunting since January 2012 and have found a total of five Buffalo nickels. Two of them came out of my own yard. My house was built in 1932.

Those coins are in great shape considering they've been in the elements for a long time. That IHC could have been lost a century ago -- or more!
