Here is an interesting piece. 30.44 mm in diameter. 1.84 mm thick. XRF (SEM/EDS) scan confirms it's a Cupro-Nickel alloy. Its thin (1.84 mm) has 360* reeding so what is it? I believe) Its a 1997-P Kennedy half struck from a quarter strip but the blank punched out was of a Kennedy half size. They grabbed a quarter strip instead of a Half Dollar strip hence its thinness and weak 360* striking around the peripheries. Its more common it seems with the 1971-P Kennedy's as this has been documented before in the Coin Community Forum and then Coin World. Probably unique. Mike Diamond currently checking it out via the US Errors Yahoo Chat Room. Will keep you posted on this neat U.S. Error. Recent purchase from a Jim's Error Coins auction (November, 2016) described as an underweight piece on an unknown planchet. Since after XRF I knew it was not a foreign planchet this then directed me to the quarter strip being the clue to its existence.

Sounds very interesting.

To me it looks like it has circulated. What is making this a wrong stock
planchet versus a very worn half dollar?

Good point. This coin weighed 10.96 grams so Mike Diamond indicated if a quarter strip it would NEED to weigh around 9.16 grams. So the end result was that this Kennedy half was struck on a rolled out thin planchet stock on a Kennedy half strip. So this is more common but still scarce/rare. The auction price was $100.

The high points on both faces are unnaturally flat and lack the tumbling marks typical of weakly-struck coins. It seems this coin is damaged as well being struck on rolled-thin stock.

Think I see a consistent wear pattern across the obv and rev high points making me think it had a helping hand. If it is rolled thin that still seems out of place.

After checking for other rolled thin and incorrect stock examples. Couldn't find much help outside of blanks created on the quarter stock , which this one does not fit weight wise.

Condor101 had replied in a previous post about half dollars blanks created from SBA stock should be in the 10.8gram range. So that seems in the ball park or another possibility here. Still the even wear across the face of the coin has me wondering. Thanks, Doug.

Re-edit - Dawned on me SBA weren't minted this year. So scratch that.

There seems to be cases here - a blank strip incorrectly rolled too thin and a blank created from a quarter strip. Maybe something else happen to it not making it a quarter weight? Will keep checking. Jim's Error Coins is one of the top error houses in the U.S.. Its real and mint made - but what happen? Mike Diamond says not as rare as from quarter stock. Will keep checking. Nothing located which is similar at the Heritage site when doing a past auctions history SEARCH ...

10.96 grams is within the tolerance range for a normal clad half dollar so this is just a normal coin (11.34 grams +/- .454 grams gives a allowed range of 10.89 to 11.79 grams.)
