Hi, I was looking through my wheat pennies again, and I found this weird-looking 1958-D penny. The "D" mint mark looks like it is extremely close to the "9" in "1958." Also, there seems to be some extra metal to the right of the D. Again, I'm no expert, so any help is much appreciated. Thanks!
As far as location: mint marks were added to working dies by hand until 1989. Their target area was below the date and to the right of the bust, so they could be almost anywhere, or upside-down, or sideways.
Does anybody collect single year, variable mint marks? I wonder which year (Lincolns) would be best for that. Fifties would obviously be easiest to get...
