So I've been buying coins for about a year and a half now, with the plan to gift them to my wife and our daughter next year when my daughter approaches 3 years old. I plan on continuing to buy them coins as a hobby for my child to (hopefully) grow up to appreciate. For memories for her to always have. I've been very specific on the type of coins I buy, historical commemoratives with connections to us in one way or another.

But I want something for them to store them in. I've seen posts about safes big and small, and gun safes. I'm not necessarily worried about crime, but more so about them being organized. About a place for them to put them, maybe something a little decorative too that we can keep out in the open.

Bonus points if you know a good book for kids talking about coin collecting that doesn't talk about State Quarters.

If you get a book, make sure it's PVC free!

I put my coins in tiny PVC-free plastic bags and then put the bags in pills bottles and then write on the bottle it's contents. Ima guess you want a more decorative way however. You may want to look at 2x2'some then.

That's a good book to get younglings going and can be had for a little over $5 on Amazon Prime:

https://www.amazon.com/One-Cent-Two...#043;Cent%2C

If you don't have Prime, let me know if you want it and I'll have it sent to you.

As far as storage, I Really Like Air-Tites* and there are many storage options from cabinets to binder pages that will hold them. The child gets to hold them without seriously messing up the finish on a valuable coin.

There are some good bulk prices if you're thinking ahead some. Look at Jake's Supplies under Coin Supplies
http://www.jakesmp.com/JGI/JGI_onli...g_001_M.html

or Wizard http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/coi...ng-supplies/

When you say commemorative, are you referring to classic half dollar commems or modern issues?

-------------------------
* Remember that coins and coins in holders like Air-Tites can be a choking hazard for kids! Until they're of a certain age [your call] make sure they are supervised and tell them we never, never, ever put coins in our mouths!

There are some options, some that will depend on how large
you think the collection will grow to.

Here are some of mine.

There are medium size gun safes that can be tucked into out
of the way spaces.

Very good photo spread GR58! It illustrates all kinds from the capsule, briefcase, small lock box, on up to small gunsafe! Super!

Thanks for posting the pix GR58! It helps me visualize the safe I'm considering (for now, I've moved the best stuff to a SD box, as I doubt I'll be parting with over a grand for a safe in the next several months--too many pending big household expenses.

So question: that looks like a 24 gun safe. Did you buy special shelving, since you're not storing guns? Did you have to go to manufacturer? Also, how do the shelves hold up under the weight of coins?

Oh, and is there a reason for the plastic wraps around the books?
Rest in Peace

That's large Ziploc bags that GR58 is using for added protection for his albums . They do not contain any bad stuff, so they're safe for coins .

Thanks T-Bop ... you are correct .. just Zip-lock bags
I put my Dansco's in ....

The safe pictured is my overflow safe. I knew where I wanted
a safe and found one to fit. I think it stared out as a 12 gun safe.

I took out the shelves it came with. Then I cut boards to fit
and covered them with felt cloth. I still used the shelf brackets
that came with the safe, but had to go to Lowes to purchase
extra shelf hangers.

I do worry about having all my coins at home, so recently I have been moving
better coins to a bank safe deposit box.

So far I have all my gold coins, better coins and some bulk silver.

This is another option to store your coins.

So far the brackets are holding up well under the weight? Even tho it looks like you put the heaviest on the bottom, the cases and books probably weigh quite a lot.

Also, did you do anything to reinforce the floor, or is this at ground level? I have a spot in mind for when I get a safe, but I live in a home with a walk out basement, and I don't want to ask them to try to wrangle a huge safe down the stairs. I worry about the weight of the safe, with the coins inside, on an upper floor. It's one reason I went with SD boxes for now. I want to have someone who knows more about these things look at the floor where I want to put the safe and tell me if it needs reinforcement, which would add to the cost. The basement is finished, by the way, so there's no way to do much with the floor structure without doing some tearing out and fixing.

I do worry about weight on the shelves. So yes the roll boxes of coins
I put on the bottom of the safe. So far I have not had any problems
with what I am putting on the shelves. You do want to make sure
you use quality wood for the shelves. If you are putting a lot of weight
on the shelves, I am sure some better brackets could be made that
would hold the weight.

For me .. right now I live in Florida .. and have concrete floors.

I would think if you can get four or five guys standing around the spot your
putting a medium size safe, 24 gun, you should be ok with your floor holding up.

discovery / biedercoins -> Thank you so much for the book recommendation. The description looks like a perfect introduction for someone her age! Also I'm referring to modern issue coins.

And thanks to everyone else for the suggestions / pictures. Right now most of the coins are still in their decorative boxes from the mint. It's nothing of high value and nothing I expect to gain value. Right now it's for the history lesson/joy/experience. Maybe some day when we all know more we'll start purchasing older coins, but right now I want something that's easy to access.Lots of good pictures and ideas. Again, thank you!
