Figured I would spread the news. Base earning rate will be reduced to 1% at the new year.
I don't generally get crazy unless I have an 8% or 10% promo, but it is nice to have that little bit of free spending money every quarter.

Yeah, this is a ridiculous deal. I earn a lot of ebay bucks (over $200 so far this year) and it's one reason why I shop ebay sometimes instead of direct. The "benefits" being added (earning bucks for selling things) are worthless to me, I don't sell on ebay. It appears to be yet another lame attempt to get more people to sell stuff on ebay so they can make more money from the ripoff fees/sell commissions/and listing charges they already earn.

I haven't seen this yet, but I appreciate the notice as I'll take a look and see what they are doing. It doesn't seem to matter what good ebay does, they eventually take the good away. A grinchy bah-humbug from me!

Figures. I didn't know about ebay Bucks until someone mentioned it in this forum, last summer, after I had already bought a lot of stuff. And now that I figured out how to best take advantage of it, they cut the rewards in half. Still better than getting nothing at all, I suppose.

I wonder if ebay's days are numbered. If they keep doing things to anger their customers and, more importantly, their sellers, their market share will shrink. I think they need a new CEO who will try to get ebay to return to its roots or create incentives for people to spend with them.

Compared to five years ago, my present ebay buying is probably about 10%, or less, of what it was. Even compared to two years ago, I doubt I'm buying 25% of what I did just 24 months ago. Primarily that's because the auctions are about the best way to buy coins, but you have to have such amazing patience that it's very nearly not worth the time any longer. Five years ago there were tons of coins at auction, very few with reserves, and a much smaller percentage of buy-it-now or Best Offer which is a joke more times than not. I have about 60 of my 100 email notices with coins. Week after week, month after month I see the same coins offered at the same price by the same sellers over and over until it's just sickening. It will sometimes be WEEKS in between me seeing even one coin that I'm notified about that has a potential to be a decent purchase. And, in all honesty, some days I just delete all of them as I have better things to do...

I doubt that ebay will close up shop based on the lack of coin sales. There are hordes of other things that are sold that work well on ebay.

ebay "jumped the shark" around 2003-2004 and hasn't looked back since. Bucks are one of the few reasons I still go there, that and PayPal, increasingly it's becoming less of an auction site by the day as at any given moment auction-style listings now only represent about 10-15% of the Coins->US category total listings (currently 938,012 listings in Coins: US at 12-1-16 20:00hrs, of those only 126,017 are auction format, i.e. 13.4%) This, combined with the lack of the ability to filter out undesired sellers / block certain keywords and other long overdue search refinements, makes me want to completely quit buying coins altogether, since there are simply no other reliable options on the Internet for buying coins auction-style except Heritage etc. with their buyers premiums.

I'll give a slightly opposing view in regards to the ebay bucks. I totally agree that it is not the auction house of good coin deals it used to be. A lot of issues- starting with free to post fixed and auction deals all the time, which means people don't have to have a quality realistic auction or buy it now because there is no financial negative result for being ridiculous. However, for the ebay bucks things. I buy a lot when they give me 8% and 10% ebay bucks on my purchases. In fact, although they don't give it for bullion, they do give it for coins. And much bullion ends up slipping into the coins category and I end up getting bullion for under spot much of the time with the frequent 8% and 10%. Their email indicates offering this even more of the time (if they really do it). That is worth more to me than 2% on all purchases any day of the week. On $500 purchase 8% is $40 ebay bucks. I make two purchases a quarter like that when they send me the deal and it is worth a lot more than 2% every day.

They send it to me now every two weeks, so even if they don't send it more, I am pretty content.
$1000 bucks over 2 months using the 8% is $80. $1000 over two months using the 2% is $20 bucks. It won't effect me as much to drop from 2% to 1% because very few of my purchases are made at that % payoff.
I do completely agree with you that it is a terrible place now for auctions.
I have modified some of my search strategies. Rather than hope for last minute action on auctions...I usually search for newly listed buy it now that allow offers. Then if it is a good newly listed that just comes up, I jump on it with a reasonable offer. Often it is taken.
I do wish it could go back to the way it was when it was quality auctions and less buy it now. As much as I hated paying thirty cents to post an auction and though I was enjoying getting all those free postings every month-- it actually contributed to a long term downward spiral.

I'm just a little peeved because they notified me of a 10% ebay Bucks this morning, after I spent $227.50 last night.

I know, I never get them on the weekends when I have time to root around. Always a Mon/Tue or a Wed/Thu. Here is another potential twist. What affect will this have on the market, if any. I, along with many, essentially use ebay sold prices as a major factor in my gauge of the market price of coins. With 8% and 10% off coupons, I will sometimes overpay for a coin if I know my net will still below true value. ebay will report the over payment as the sold amount. Other people will see the price I paid and price accordingly. Example: $100 price of coin. But going coin value has always been $95. I pay the $100 because I get 10% ebay coupon bringing my total to $90. I got the coin for $5 below value. However, the next guy who looks for the coin on ebay will see it sold for $100 and price accordingly.

ebay is a funny place. They have a knack for driving away Buyers AND Sellers. Just another nail in the coffin any way you look at it.

Folks, it actually just got even worse. I received my quarterly ebay bucks today. It came out to $52.46. I decided to bid on a coin that I thought might end for around that price so I bid that amount. Low and behold I won the auction for exactly that amount, imagine that. So I moseyed on over to pay for the coin using my ebay bucks and it gave me the message that it isn't a "qualifying spend". I've always used my ebay bucks to purchase coins so I was a bit dismayed. I gave them a call and they told me that effective January 1, 2017 they've updated their list of what qualifies and coins are no longer a qualified spend for ebay bucks. I told them I thought that was only for the sub-category of bullion within the coins and paper money category. The person I was speaking with then said, yes, well that has now changed to include all items under coins and paper money, not just bullion. Since coins are pretty much all I buy on ebay I guess ebay bucks are pretty much worthless to me now. Bummer *edit: If anyone else ends up having the same experience as me with their newly acquired ebay bucks. Or if you are able to successfully use them to purchase coins, please post about it here.
