Hi everyone,

Grabbed this today from my LCS and while it looked ok at the shop and after having had a better look at home I now start to think that the surfaces might not be original as something looks odd with it

Interested to hear your opinions on it

Thanks

Ignorant opinion on my part.
Just a guess.
Maybe doctored or "whizzed" or something else to remove tarnish and staining then resulting in a "satin" field finish?
I regret I have become less and less helpful when it comes to pictures of coins. I have and have seen so many good ones and bad ones it's hard for me to say one way or the other.

How does it shine when light hits it at certain angles. It looks like it should be a flashy BU, but I agree it might have been dipped. When shopping Japanese ebay stores, I noticed a LOT of cleaned coins... I just don't think it's as big of an issue/taboo over there.

I'd ask if the little blob at the edge just above 9 o'clock on the reverse is due to a rim ding, or is just there. I'm presuming you've weighed it at least, and ideally determined a specific gravity for it as well.

I think the blob at 9 o'clock is just a piece of foam sticking out of the ring.
There are a few rough patches on the reverse, most noticeable in the middle, for example on the top stroke of the yen character. The picture is too small to tell exactly what they are.
It could be glue or PVC...

The coin looks genuine, but it's hard to tell from the photos if it's been cleaned. Is it possible to show a photo that's angled to see if it's been wizzed?

e.g. A 50 Sen wizzed coin. You have to angle the coin in the light to see the fine scratch marks:

Coins with some darkening, that have then been wizzed, also look darker in the crevasses.

Looks genuine... Overall dull (cloudy) surfaces, rather splotchy in the big open fields of the reverse - I also guess PVC over an old dip.

Dnas - that piece you're showing isn't so much "whizzed" as simply cleaned (scrubbed) harshly at some point.

Yes, I suppose so... wizzing usually has parallel lines, while this has more randomly aligned scratches, like it's been scrubbed with a harsh brush.
