While I've had some luck in the past with bulk lots purchased off of ebay, I've not purchased any for about 5 years. Since it's getting cold around here and the desire to go out in it is going down as quickly as the temperature, I thought I'd purchase a bulk lot and see what I find and give me something to do.

I found a 6 pound lot from a dealer that regular sells on ebay that happened to be a decent price and looked from the photos to be a decent mix and I got for a decent price from what the poundage is usually selling for. Received it today and weighed it and I got over 7 pounds so already a bonus.

I like stats, so I plan on keeping decent stats on what is in this lot and I'll share those here when I'm done. In the meantime, I'll post any observations, highlights or photos of anything that jumps out at me as I go through it, if for no other reason than to document my findings. Should be fun regardless of what I find (or don't find)
Rest in Peace

I always have fun with these regardless of what I find.

So there were a few carded coins with these so I took a quick look at those. Right off the bat, I find one that fills a hole. This is from Mongolia (1994 - 100 Togrog), a country I've not run across yet. Nothing valuable but it is a nice hole filler.

Ive had some really good luck with bulk on ebay, after a few purchases you can usually tell by the photos which lots are good and which will be full of duplicates, modern coinage etc.
selling off the top 10% individually and then bulking out the remainder has pretty much let me build my OFEC without any heavy out-of-pocket expenses.

Wade: A side motive for this is to do exactly that, keep what I want, individually sell off what I can and do what I can with the rest to see how far this one purchase can take me without adding in any further money. Actually, the money I used for this purchase came from selling off some stuff from a bulk purchase I made years ago.
Rest in Peace

Good luck with your searching. I've always found the biggest dealers have the least time to look through bulk and you can even find a little silver on occasion.

Coin lots can indeed be great fun. Seems like you bought a very nice one already!

Nice find, that Mongolian coin and great condition too! I've been looking all over the place for Mongolian coins 'in the wild' and they're not easy to find - I even searched Mongolia for them, but there the smallest circulating denomination (worth less than a cent) is paper money...

Good luck and hope you have fun! I have never had a lot of luck with bulk lots; those that sell them usually pick through very well. I have found some real treasures in the smaller lots, however!

So I finished going through this lot and thought I'd share some stats on this, so fair warning this may contain some boring statistics, though I love to keep track of this kind of stuff.

A total of 595 coins in 6.16 pounds, 96.5 coins per pound. So my initial weight of over 7 pounds was off, so not quite sure where I came up with that :)

I received coins from 66 countries. The top 10 countries where:

Great Britain: 129 coins (21.6%)
Turkey: 116 coins (19.5%)
Mexico: 72 coins (12.1%)
France: 26 coins (4.3%)
Spain: 25 coins (4.2%)
Saudi Arabia: 17 coins (2.8%)
Israel: 16 coins (2.7%)
Jamaica: 16 coins (2.7%)
Netherlands: 13 coins (2.2%)
Syria, Lebanon each had 12 coins (2.0% each)

So you can see that over 75% of the coins were from those 11 countries. The Great Britain coins were a bit of a disappointment. It was very heavy with the 1 New Penny and 2 New Pence from 1971 - 1981 or so. Very common coins so that was a bit of a disappointment and it became a bit tiresome pulling those out of the bag. The coins from Turkey were also very heavy with almost all being from the 25 Kurus series from 1959 - 1978 where I amassed 107 of those 116 coins and was able to put together multiple complete date sets (minus the rarer 1978). Most of these were relatively high grade though they did come kind of heavy with bag marks.

The Mexican coins were also heavily concentrated with one series with a large majority being 5 Centavos from 1968 to 1976. These were interesting as most of them were AU/BU and contained some really nice looking coins. Again nothing rare, but some nice looking specimens.

That seemed to be a theme through this, while none of the coins were really rare or valuable, a large portion of them were very high grade. I hope to get some pictures of some of the nicer ones here soon (or ones I may plan on putting up on ebay at some point) and will post them here if I ever get around to it.

The date ranges fell from 1920 to 2016 and there were 91 distinct dates represented. Here's a breakdown by decade.

1920s - 4 coins (0.67%)
1930s - 2 coins (0.34%)
1940s - 4 coins (0.67%)
1950s - 21 coins (3.53%)
1960s - 150 coins (25.21%)
1970s - 256 coins (43.03%)
1980s - 63 coins (10.59%)
1990s - 25 coins (4.20%)
2000s - 23 coins (3.87%)
2010s - 15 coins (2.52%)

The 70s were greatly skewed by the large number of 1971 United Kingdom Penny's and 2 Pence that were in this batch. (Anyone know of any good varieties in those, I've got a lot I could search through)

Some interesting highlights:
-- The Mongolian coin I had an image for above in this thread, nice BU example for a country I had not found yet.
-- 1968 New Zealand 20 cents (mintage of 40,000). This prooflike example was released only in sets from what I understand.
-- 1982 Great Britain 2 Pence. This was only released in sets and was a nice find in the wild, especially with all the commons I found from those series.
-- large number of 25 & 10 Piastres in high grade that were in this lot. These are just pretty coins and have a real nice design and color to them. I'm going to try and image them and see if I can reproduce the look of them.
-- Kuwait coin, a 1974 20 fils. Nothing special, but not a country I see too often in these lots.

Overall a so-so lot. Nothing really special, but there are some nice looking coins in there. No silver, but didn't expect any either (though it's nice when one slips through). I've got plenty to add to my collection and I don't think I'll have a problem getting my money plus some out of the rest, but I've had better lots with better variety.

I've got two smaller lots of all Mexican coins (I'm a bit partial to Mexican coinage) to go through and of course will be keeping stats. If this kind of post-mortem is of interest, I'll post up my findings in these other lots.

@Harpua, your results pretty much indicate why I have given up on bulk lots of foreign. Good for a new collector, but the duplicates build up rather rapidly.

I remember buying a bulk lot years ago (pre ebay). There were so many UK half pennies that I never bought from the dealer again. Funny but I kind of like the half pennies now; most of them were BU.
