Ok. Collectors I need some help. I see that theres other post about silver pennies but I'm new to this forum and I got questions.
Here we go...i have 2 silver pennies dating 1978 and 1983 both silver and shiny. It looks fake to me but the 1978 weighs 3.09g and the 1983 weighs 2.5g. With these info I still dont know its legitimacy. What you collectors think?

They have been plated in something to give them that silver look. Fun little novelty cents.

They are worth 1 cent each. If someone is interested in a novelty they might pay 10-25 cents each.

to CCF Many new collectors have a lot of questions. As posted these coins were plated after leaving the mint. The 1978 weighs more because it it a copper cent. The 1983 started out a copper coated zinc cent.

hopefully those were only plated with Nickel, it could be mercury, which is extremely dangerous to touch. I might suggest tossing them in the garbage, just to be safe.

Throw those into the garbage just to be safe. It may be mercury plated just like the person above me just said.

If you CRH, over time you will find dozens of plated coins. I usually give these to folks I work with who have kids since the novelty isn't wasted on them (immediately anyway). It's a nice way to try and hook a youngster to get into the hobby.
I received a plated Bicentennial quarter yesterday in change at lunch. I put it on the desk of one of those folks with kids. I was hoping for an impaired proof at first glance, but it was just a poorly plated quarter.
