have been looking every where for a good shinny 64 proof OGM set. All I can find are sets that look like this.

1964-Proof-Set-Difference

I can find just the coin's that look like the one below but not in OGM sets. Why is this so hard ? Is there something that has been done to these coins.

I wonder if the cello is causing the discoloration? ive heard mixed opinion on if the mints OGP damages coins or not. I've been tempted to cut my sets out but I don't know how much it would lower the value.

Most times dealers cut out the cameo coins and accented hair to sell by themselves. Pretty hard to find them now. But once in a while you can find accented hair and Type 2 reverses in the sets

Proof sets from 1964 have been cherry picked long ago.

Are you guys saying those coins with spots or haziness came like that straight from the mint?

In my opinion ... the sets with spots and haze have not been stored well.

Cherry picking cameo and accented hair would have been the first ones
that were looked for ... cherry picked.

They are out there ... but nice .. better condition sets are getting harder
to find.

Your better off trying to accumulate sets for a little over melt then find sets worth more then much melt. Been cherry picked for a long time. I suggest bundling multiple sets when you coming across someone with a bunch for sale. Bundling will keep your cost down.

An interesting thread.
I've had 24 1964 Proof sets (like the one pictured) that have been locked away in a vault and haven't seen the light of day since 1965.
You have my curiosity going as to whether they now look like the one pictured. Is it worth a days drive for me to investigate their condition, or would you bet their seriously degraded like the one shown?

The curiosity would get the better of me @pocketchange2.

I would have to make time after Christmas to go check them out.

And take your camera cause......

The curiosity is going to get the best of me, also; and I'm hoping for a good camera from santa, so that I can display what happens to proof sets that spent 52 years stored in a vault with no sunshine.

Hello cuzzx;

I finally retrieved the 1963 and 1964 Proof Sets (that I had mentioned back in December) that have not seen the light of day since they arrived in 1968-69(?). I thought at the time that the ultraviolet light might have been working on all the 1964 proof sets that you have been recently reviewing, so I thought I might retrieve the sets I had, to see what 49 years of "darkness" did to the fifty sets that I had squirreled away all those years.
From looking at them in hand, my observations are that the Kennedy half's (etc.) look essentially identical to the one you illustrated in your second-posted picture. Absolutely no discoloration is visible to my eyes on any of my Proof Sets!
Since Santa has not brought me a good DSLR camera, yet, I can only post the following pics at this time. I'll eventually post much better pictures taken with my old 35 mm (expensive)film camera.
What do you think of the pics, so far?
