*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***How can a coin look so nice on one side and so dull on the other side? MG

Because someone messed around with it... PCGS would call that one 'Genuine - Questionable Color'

Thanks SPP-Ottawa! My Theory is that it must of laid flat for a very long time?

It could have been in an old coin folder for a long time. I bought a set of Roosevelt dimes (mostly UNC) that had dark stripes on all the reverses from contact with the paper and glue stripes you could see in the holes in the folder. Still, it is a very nice coin!

Still a great cent...Haxby PC378...dies 37+F7
Just love the RP in the bottom of the I..
I've seen a lot of cents that have one side so much darker and uglier than the other.
If it was sitting in a drawer for many years, I could see how the up side would grab a lot more atmosphere and it might show like this..

Doesn't appear to have been "played with". Simply had the reverse exposed and the obverse protected for a protracted period, or the reverse was in contact with paper or other material that caused it to darken more.
Still a darned nice looking coin.

Yup, shame to me looks like it has been in a dark spot for a while laying on the obverse.

Agree - I see no evidence of tampering. Very nice example.

I think it was cleaned or should I say 'dipped', many moons ago and it's slowly trying to come back, but the obverse is succeeding a lot better than the reverse.

Very very nice. Question-Is that an upside down "A" being used for the "V" in Victoria ?

It could have been sitting in a container with the obverse exposed and the reverse against some material. The spot on reverse is bothersome and the only area on the coin that I would say something may have been done.
