1942/41 Mercury dime - Should I Reholder? I received this dime in a trade for some of my scarce but duplicate tokens. I usually like my coins to be as close as possible to the color they were minted in. I don't usually fall in love with toned coins, although I do have a few that I couldn't resist. In this case, this Mercury dime looks accurately graded by ANACS, back when they were still using their small white holders. I'm certain the toning is original, too, even though something this colorful might be questionable if not in a righteous slab. Yes, I am aware there is a small rim ding at 12:00 on the reverse. It is really small and only looks larger because of the dimes small size. So my question is this - I would like to crack this out of the ANACS holder and resubmit to NGC. Do you see any problem with this coming back at the same grade of AU-50? I just don't like the ANACS holder because the coin is "buried" so deep that it's really hard to see. But for a coin like this I know if I ever sell it, that it has to be in a NGC or PCGS capsule to dispel any concern with authenticity. NGC has been really tough on grading since they've switched over to the left side alignment on their labels. So as much as I like this at the AU-50, I thought it wise to get some opinions. What say you?

Tough call. I would worry about an AT grade and to me at least, the right reverse field looks once-cleaned. My hunch is to leave it alone.
Nice coin in any event!

I'd leave it be as well. It looks accurately graded too.

I would leave it alone, it might come back cleaned or damaged due to the rim ding on the reverse at 12:00

I would not risk it coming back a lesser or details grade. AU-50 looks correct.

It's not what you asked, but would you consider having ANACS reholder it? That would resolve the "buried deep" issue and would leave the grade intact, but would not address authenticity with NGC/PCGS and would also make the ding more visible in a clear case.

You might consider trying to cross the coin to PCGS at the same grade. If the coin has a viewing issue, it has no chance to cross, but your photos look OK.

The idea of resubmitting to ANACS is actually a good one, but for their drop to a much lower level of respect of late.
The small white holders are usually considered much more honestly and consistently graded than their later issues, so if it crossed it would probably lose value in a newer holder.

I like the PCGS idea, that way you could keep it in the same holder if it doesn't cross.

I like the crossover idea, maybe keep it in the slab and let PCGS get it out. Very nice coin!!

When a rim dent intrudes beyond the inner boundary of the rim it has a serious chance of earning a "damaged" designation. A crossover attempt makes sense to guarantee you avoid a problem-coin result. You might even specify a minimum XF-45 grade to give the graders an option to award a no-problem net grade.
I agree it's not the best idea to invest in an ANACS reholder service.

i would be afraid that it would come back with a details or damaged designation. if you can live with it in that holder, i'd be inclined to keep it there

Leave it in the holder it's in.
