In Charltons 68th Edition on 50c Varieties, there are 15 different varieties listed. These include Narrow Date, Wide Date, Round back 9, Flat Back 9, 4/4, 5/5 with combinations of these.

@aswag - Thanks, you can upload the .gif image extension on this forum. All you need is a GIF maker, many are Free on the internet. I uploaded one before to show the cartwheel luster on a silver coin, pretty impressive effect that shows others what you see in hand that doesn't show with normal photos.

There is also a Scarce Die pairing with a Blunt 5 as compared to the normal pointed 5. The repunched pointed 5 comes in about 3 or 4 different variants and ICCS does designate the Repunch. 201680003120 ebay for a toned Repunch example ICCS.

Hmmm... thanks Pacificoin for that little tidbit about the Blunt 5. You've piqued my curiosity.

1941 through 1949 George VI 50c dies have the last two digits of the date entered into each die individually. There are 42 reverse dies listed in Mint documents for 1945 so there are 42 punch spacing varieties and other things like repunches etc that are introduced with the date digit entries.

Apart from die cracks and other Minor Varieties, I concentrate on the extremes of positioning ie. wide and narrow dates, high and low digits etc. Along with the other Major varieties repunches, different punches, etc. Charltons does not have a complete listing, but the 14th is a good place to start.

Another thing I notice is the weak strike at the bottom of the crown I assume this is the Die Deterioration

Quote: Another thing I notice is the weak strike at the bottom of the crown I assume this is the die deterioration J Haxby, in his landmark book "Striking Impressions" says "this coin [the 50 cent] required such a large amount of metal to bring up the portrait that the reverse did not strike up properly".

And if I recall correctly, that was the reason the reverse changed in 1959. @pginrh can correct me though - he wrote the Charlton section.
