Hey! I wondered... I have this paperweight I know came from the US Mint... My mom had a friend who either worked for the mint or knew someone who did and would always give her coin sets and the like as gifts. This one is acrylic, diamond shaped, with a 2000 liberty silver dllar encased within. I've only found one of them on ebay with a ridiculous price of 1000 dollars...but with 10 people watching it. So despite the price, there's obviously interest for it. Now mine's not in mint condition, and it's loose---not with the box. But I can't seem to find much informtion on it and it's apparently something only US mint dealers were given? I put the auction link at the bottom. The one I have, like I said, is the same thing, but in used condition. (I put a pic of mine in this post, too.) Does anyone know anything about this? Any ideas on what a loose one would be worth? Any ideas what kind of demand there is for it? http://www.ebay.com/itm/U-S-Mint-Ye...AOSwVL1WE-Ys

I have some like those. Some are entire mint sets, some are just one coin.

Those are really cool...I've actually seen those two specific ones efore. In pics, not in person. But not the one I have. I wondered if anyone knew whether or not the auction guy has it right, and that it was a very limited run and was not for sale to the general public.

The one in the diamond shaped acrylic is called an American Silver Eagle, and they are worth around 18-20$ on any given day (approximate)depending on the market (spot) price of silver. People buy them as investments hoping to buy low and sell high. They can also be collected by year and mm. Stuck in resin I don't know what it's worth. The one in the cube is an Eisenhower dollar ( Ike dollar) and would be worth a dollar if it wasn't stuck in acrylic. Very hard to spend this way. But that one is yours, Fuzzy, isn't it?

Biedercoins, Yes, I have several different coin "sets" encased in resin. Most I have pictured here: Encased Coins

I spent the better part of two weeks freeing an 1905 indian (liberty with feathers) cent from an acrylic cube last winter. If I'd known you collected encased, I'd have sent it to you!

I happen to find them on an auction site, sometimes I bet on them. I have slowed lately.

So what do you think about this ASE in the diamond? Gift to mint workers to celebrate the millennium?

Hey! Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate it. I know about what the coin itself is worth...that's not what I mean. I know about the coin s and I know the Encased Coin sets. I want to know about THIS EXACT paperweight. This specific paperweight, the 2000 liberty dollar in the diamond-shaped acrylic. The one seller I can find for this specific item says: "In 2000, dealers who were involved with the retail sale of US Silver Eagle Coins, and on the official US Mint Dealer List, received these as a token gift from the mint." I just want to know if anyone here knows if this is correct or not, and about how much it is worth if the item is rare. Thanks again! PS Fuzzy...cool collection!

There was one listed on ebay awhile back with a $499 BIN price. It failed to sell, so there's an upper limit for its price (the guy with the listing at $1000 is going to be disappointed). About this particular gift... it's going to depend on who wants one and how bad they're wanting it. If I walked in to my LCS and they had one sitting on some papers and I asked if they would sell it, they would likely invite me to make an offer. Unless they were really attached to it, I'm guessing $100 would buy it. What have you paid for similar, Fuzzy?

By the way, to the CCF, hyenacub. We may not have all the answers in this case, but there are lifetimes worth of knowledge among the members who read and write in these forums [fora?]. And does your mother know you call yourself hyenacub?

For the ASE above, at today's spot price I wouldn't go more than $50-75. Now if it was a special date or from my hometown bank or several other things that would add value for me, that may go higher. edited price range

By playing with keywords I just found your answer: one sold on ebay in mid-December for $35. Probably not what you were hoping.

Biedercoins-thanks for the info! I *was* interested on if it managed to sell in the past for th higher prices. It gives me an idea of where to list it at. Thanks for the welcome! I love coins, though can't really afford to get them often. I'm definitely going to be prowling the forums. : D Well I didin't think it would sell for hundreds, so it's not a hugee disappointment. I don't know why I couodln't find it though. Thanks for the assist! My mom passed away a yer ago. But she did know I called myself hyenacub...XD It's the useername I most often use. Hyenas are my favorite animal. Most people online call me Cub or Cubby. c: I actually have a Sacagawea dollar in a round paperweight that is favorite of mine. : D

Sorry about your Mom. Since this was hers, maybe it's best to just keep it, at least for now. Once you've reached the requisite number of posts (check rules and regulations in new member forum), you'll be able to list it here where there is a more discerning crowd . Catch you later, Cubby.
