1572 early days of the Dutch Republic
counterstrike of ZEELAND Delm 141C R2
the host coin is a 1558 Philipsdaalder (taler size) minted in Bruges, Duchy of Flanders
ex Huntington collection

these counterstrikes (taxes to pay for the war effort of the rebels) are much more common with the Holland variants than this variant issued in Zeeland.

Here is our 9th entrant for 1572: 1 Groschen from the German Duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. In addition to being in Krause, it can be attributed as Saurma 3686.

Let's make it ten entries.

This was a more recent purchase of mine, which is my third (and last) coin from 1572. It is a 1 schilling piece from the Duchy of Livonia:

@joseph, I like that sword-wielding critter. As I'm not familiar with Livonian heraldry, is that an eagle? A griffin?

I believe we have used them before. I am find with them as long as they have a date or can be dated to a specific year by other means.

Excellent!

I am sure someone will post a coin tomorrow as well. Even if yours were not allowed to advance our journey backward, it would still be a welcome bonus like the coins that can only be narrowed down to a rage of years.

Here is a 1/84 Gulden from the German Free City of Nürnberg that is dated 1571 AD. Similar to Saurma 1158.
