1574 Siege of Leyden Paper 5 Stuivers from the Netherlands. These were literally struck out of multiple pages of church missals/hymnals when all metals ran out during the siege. So, it is actually made out of religious texts/books.

@casualcoincollector
great and famous coin - excellent preservation !
an interesting detail you mention is that these paper coins were made from church books another interesing detail is the counterstamp of Holland, which we will see during the next days (1572-1573), they were still used in 1574

@1c5d7n5m
Thanks for the info on the counterstamp!
Yeah, it is one of the better condition ones that I have seen. I had been looking for one of these for quite a while and was finally able to pick up this one at auction last month. Currently it is at PCGS for certification. I am pretty curious to see what they grade it as but regardless of the grade I am mostly getting it certified and encapsulated for its protection.

Thanks for sharing that @CCC--it is in absolutely amazing shape for being made from 16th century paper! Here is a groschen from the German Free City of Hildesheim dated (15)74 AD. It is attributed as Saurma 4040.

Here is a Groshen from the German Electorate of Saxony-Albertine dated (15)73 AD. In addition to being in Krause, I have it attributed as Kohl 56.

The Free City of Riga did not make any coins with the date of 1573, but they did make a lot in 1572. This is the one in my date set: 1572 is probably the third most common date of this type.
