Last Saturday I received a box from the mint. I had ordered the last two 2016 three roll (P/D/S) ATB Quarters. The only way to get the "S" mint business strike quarters is to order the rolls or bags. The only problem is when I got the box it was empty ... It looks like the end of the box had been pulled open, the white boxes the rolls come in taken out, and the box closed back up. Not sure why the mint didn't use the tape sealed box. Now I am thinking somebody is out there spending my quarters. Talked to the mint and the Post Office today .. no help really. Fill out the form and we will get back to you in 4 to 6 weeks. Anybody have this happen to them?

Yuk. I've had mail mishaps before but it's been from overseas sellers, not the Mint. Good luck.

WOW, This is awful. It would of been super disappointing to open this empty box after awaiting the arrival of you newest additions. Lets hope you can get this resolved with a favourable outcome

I hope so too .. I am really sort of stuck .. Wait for the mint to refund my money. Wait for the Post Office to find my coins At that point .. will the mint still have the roll sets available? If I wait. Purchase them again .. $98.xx ... and wait for the results. Having trouble even finding the form on the USPS site .. what a mess

Never had this happen to me....yet!
Don't look for much help from the mint or post office on this one. It looks like this was a Smart Post pkg where FedEx or UPS did the biggest part of the pkg movement from the Mint's contract supplier to the destination post office. It is then handed off to your local post office for final delivery. I suspect it got pilfered somewhere after it left the mint's contract supplier and before it was dropped off at your post office.
Unless you confronted your mailman when he/she delivered the empty box you are probably gonna be out of luck. I really, really hope you brought it to his/her attention.
The mint is gonna say "the coins were in the box when we shipped it." The post office is gonna drag their heels, do a two-bit "investigation" and say "it was not brought to our attention until AFTER the customer took possession of the shipment. As far as we are concerned the coins were in the box at delivery and we can't help you".
This really stinks!

I would also call my credit card and file a claim-thats horrible good luck and keep us posted...
This is also why they should never be allowed to leave boxes that dont fit in a mailbox without a sig or a customer release ahead of time its ridiculous. Ive had boxes stolen right off my porch before luckily not coins tho...yet!

If you filed a claim with the post office and notified the mint, the mint does seem to have a track record of replacing items lost or stolen in the mail.

Interesting development Having the box arive without the six rolls quarter made me think about not ordering coins from the mint. Everyone told me there was really nothing I could do and that not much of a chance of getting the missing coins. Talking to the local post master did nothing except make me angry. After a month I thought I might as well fax the form to the mint, which I did last Tuesday. I was very surprised when checking my account today all my money was refunded. Now ... I am wondering if I dare ordering the quarters again. I am told that I can request a signature for delivery. I wonder if I can request the package have all the seams taped? I would really feel bad if I order these again, and get another empty box.

GR58, I had a similar situation 3-4 years ago but it was from ebay. I had bought 3 rolls of wheaties and when the bubble mailer arrived it was empty. The corner was torn off and NO coins to be found. Was weird getting an empty piece of mail. Thankfully it was quickly resolved. I contacted the seller and sent pics of the package and he sent me 3 more rolls at no charge.

GR58: My last job was a rural mail carrier. Now, this was 2007, for an employee to be caught stealing mail, tampering, etc, the PO Inspectors were usually called. Shortly before I had to quit, the POI's, 2 dudes in black suits w/ a BIG bulge under their left arms, came in, cuffed a temporary carrier, ordered all of us to shut up, no questions...blah, blah, blah. Seems this guy was snagging Christmas cards for the cash inside, good reseal job too. He's probably still in fed pen unless Obama freed him! Should have notified Postal Inspector's Office and reported theft , may have gotten a better response. As carriers part of duties was to notify of empty/opened letters/packages. and if opened, tape them snd hsnd deliver to customer with explanation of what we found. That way at least I was off the hook, Twice had to do this in 5 years.
Also, that box should have been tape and secured upon entry into first postal acceptance point (bar code}. Yes you should be able to specify a "double wrap" (sender)and delivery signature required (PO).

GR58....
Just curious...what made you so angry when talking to your postmaster? Sounds like he did not want to help you or take ownership of the problem.

Glad you got your refund. I would be reluctant to order them again, but then again, I am typically one who will give a second chance. Tough call here.

Crazyb0 Thank you for posting, if I had known about postal inspectors, I think I would have contacted them.
---------------------- westernsky
I think what made me angry, the post master would not intertain any idea to what happen except that the box must have broken open and the contents were separated from the box. He was saying ...he could somehow check to see if there was some missing items in the system.
To me only possibilities - The mint shipped a empty box Or - The shipping box was opened in the postal system and the two boxes of quarter rolls removed. Then the shipping box was closed back up empty.
Who ever closed the shipping box up had to know it was empty. If that person did not have something to do with stealing the quarters, why not report the situation.

Jbuck For now I am thinking the problem was the type of box that was used. I might add to a order, with hopes of getting a different box.

Postal inspectors are useless.
I had a package cut, contents removed and resealed with brown glue.
When I brought it to the postmaster of the local office, after a bit of a struggle I was given the form to send to the regional inspector.
About three weeks later I received the envelope back with the non-apology apology for the damage to my mail piece. Nothing about investigating the theft.
