I finally pulled the trigger on my first "Full Vine" variety.

From Rob Turner's books, there are 3 Full Vine Varieties with 16 full stems and 1 Full Vine Variety with 15 full stems.

I was wondering if anyone knew how many mint state full vines there are out there. I have found two on Heritage Auctions, and I would imagine there can't be more than 4-5 in total.

I would also imagine they are owned by Mr.Rob Turner

Great cent and at a great price....but how much did the mint state HA cents go for..?

Rob Turner's work explains the ~ % of these few..but he does show very nice examples in his book.

There are probably more MS examples than your estimate..but still a great find..

An MS63 sold for $1840US in 2008:

An MS64 sold for $1840US in 2010:

I couldn't find any others. With PCGS slabbing about 100 1858s and full vines accounting for 4%, that's where I got my 4-5 number :)

I bought the 2008 coin. I passed on the 2010 coin, because I thought it was not as nice as my 63. I know of no others in mint state, but there are likely a few out there.

The rarities in my 1858 book were calculated from probabilities associated with a 150 coin random sample. Of the four full vine dies, the book had RA3 at 2% of the mintage and the other three at 0.67% of the mintage each, meaning you have about a 1 in 25 chance of finding an 1858 cent with a full vine.

The years since then have shown me that RA3 and RA1 are slightly more common than my original sample showed. RA2 and RA4 are considerably scarcer, as I only know of 5 or 6 examples of each, although more must be out there.

Thanks for the added info and links..CV..Greatly appreciated.

..and many thanks to Rob Turner for all of the details and photos for us to study with..I would be lost without all of his work and explanations..

I used the #'s and %'s from Rob's text "The 1858 Cents Of Provincial Canada" in my above posting. ( I hope that that was OK..)

I wonder how many of these are crossovers..?

I have a few that will get down to PCGS and I won't be shipping the ICCS certs with them....so some duplication must be taking place here.

Absolutely...to account for cross-overs and resubmissions, I tend to subtract the total PCGS+ICCS by 30% (no scientific basis behind that, just my math trick)...

so that yields about 150 mint 1858s, with no more than 6 Full Vines out there (of the 4 different varieties :))

That would make my AU58 a Top 3 ever graded coin

What a great looking coin CV, congrats!. Will you leave it in the NGC holder?
Here's a look at the same coin, not anywhere near as nice as yours but in a later die state. Notice the additional die cracks.

Cheers, Bill
