I am wanting to buy the key dates first for my certified Peace dollar set. My minimum grade is MS-63 except for possibly the 34-s. I am budgeting under $1000 per coin for all dates, but the 34-S has me in a bit of a conundrum. Should I buy it in high AU first? A $5000 coin is a bit too much for me at the moment, but I could focus on the '28 and '21 first in MS64.

Thoughts on the best strategy here?

I have traveled the path you are on ... and the best advise I can offer is to decide your collecting goals up front ... and stick with them.

Suppose you 'short' yourself with an AU 1934-S Peace ... then someday have the resources to upgrade ... that decision will cost you time and money.

You said minimum grade is MS63 ... good goal ... hold out for that if you can afford it.

My thoughts are ....

Figure out what grades will make you happy.

Then research ... so you will know how much you want to pay for the grades.

Then when the coins come along that fit your grade and price, buy it.

If you pass on other empty holes ... just because you are looking for
a 34 S .... then you might be passing on good deals that you might not
see again.

Shop for the good deals first.

If you are going to buy a 34-s Peace dollar you should get the best one you can afford. It is one of those conditional rarities. In EF they are not worth much. In MS65 they are worth big money.

To me the 34-s is sort of like getting a 1916-D Mercury dime in AG condition or a 1916 LSQ in good condition. It is not worth the money to me. If you get one of those coins pay the money and get the best one you can possibly get. If you are going to get a rare coin get the best. If you ever go to try and sell them collectors and investors are interested in the really fine and outstanding ones IMO. I will probably never have a 93-S Morgan because I don't want one in smooth condition.

When I was a dealer I saw some very conservatively graded 1934-S dollars. They were in MS-61 holders, but they looked better than that to me.

I've been out of the market for those coins for a long time, but there still might be some left out there.
